The icons that I've created for a website of mine are starting to become a little disjointed in size and styling. I"m wanting to spend some time creating a standardized icon set. I'm most concerned about the approach in creating a size that can be used throughout the site either big or small.
Question: What is the best size to create an icon set used for Web? 24x24 and 30x30 seem to be common as they're standards for Material design and iOS Design. So I could pick one of those; however, those can be pretty large for system icons (e.g. help icon).
Does one typically design 1 size (say 24x24) and then resize where necessary depending on the application? Say a large help icon vs a small help icon in a menu, for example, both based on the same 24x24 original icon.
I've seen 1 singular set of icons come in sizes of 18, 24, 30, 36, 42, 48 to cover a whole range of different sizes. Is something like this common practice? Where those don't divide into each other equally one would need to adjust the icon where necessary so that it precisely falls on the pixel grid and results in crisp lines across all sizes.
I'm curious how others in the web design community approach icon design used for the web.
Edit: forgot to add that I’m designing these in Sketch so in vector format, and to clarify my question is not so much as best practices of designing the actual icon but more on a standard size (canvas size of the icon if you will) of the set.

How do I set a font so that stupid Myriad does not appear each time I open a new image? I have to plow through a hundred other fonts to get back to the one I need every single time I open a new image.
I resent that Adobe thinks they know what I need and wastes my time slogging through each and every time I need the font I need ... and Adobe sets Myriad as the default.
I am beginning to despise the company for several things they are doing of late.
How do I set the font I need and make it stay put for each successive image that I open? I have close to 80 more images to do.

Select the L.
Select the blue shape.
Turn on Draw Inside mode by hitting the rightmost of the three buttons near the bottom of the toolbar.

Turn off Draw Inside mode by hitting one of the other two buttons in its row. Probably Draw Above.
Internally this makes a clipping mask just like any other. But it doesn't remove the clipping mask's fill or stroke.
: Re: Script to place a circle on the center of of all my strokes I have a design I'd like to laser cut and need to put a circle in the center of the red lines. Is there a way to place
You could try this:
Select a red line.
Open the Appearance palette.
Add a new stroke (button at the lower left of the palette)
effect>convert to shape>ellipse, change the size to absolute, then enter whatever numbers you want for the actual size
Open the Graphic Styles palette and create a new style.
You can now change the weight of every line and circle drawn with this style:
click on the style you made in the Graphic Styles palette, or select a path drawn using this style
visit the Appearance palette and select the individual strokes to modify them
open the Appearance palette's menu, do "redefine graphic style", everything linked to this style should change to match
This won't work if some of your lines that need a circle in their middle are curved.

when I 'select all' and/or 'select all in all layers' in inkscape to transform and manipulate my design for transform/scale not all layers are transforming. all layers visible and no layers are locked.
the multiple layers include text layers that are stacked on top of each other. The text layers are stacked to create a more solid text 'effect' with slight variation. my goal is to transform the entire design to fit specific dimensions in transform/scale.
when I select all or select all in all layers, not all layers change to the spec dimensions when scaling. the main (original) text layer was created with 'put on path' and the majority of text layers stacked (on top) were mostly created with duplicate current layer.
I am thinking that not all text layers have the 'put on path' transferring over when transform/scale as some were displaying in a smaller selection box rather than following the path when the specific dimensions I also think this may have to do with the text layers stacked one on top of each other.

: Re: Beginner trying to place a person, minus the background color, on a book cover I always seem to end up with black or white backgrounds instead of transparent ones. All I need to do is find
Separating your image from its background can be time-consuming, especially if your subject has hair/feathers or other objects that are difficult to isolate/cut out. If the background allows, try using the "Background Eraser" tool to remove the background from your subject. You can adjust how sensitive it is. If this works to your liking, save the image with the transparent background as a png file (which will not include a white box background, and allows your background to be visible behind the subject). Search for tutorials on "Background eraser tool" if you need assistance with it.
: Re: Why does my master page move when the page shuffles left/right? I am laying out a book in Adobe InDesign. Context: Since creating the original book document, I have changed the page size
I was having this same problem. Be sure the margins on your master pages are set to your desired specs, and that your "Primary Text Frames" (checked when creating the document) are set in those margins. In my case, I needed my outer margins to be wider than my inner to allow for notes and graphics in the outer margins. Simply setting the master text frames to my desired dimensions would not make them appear correctly on the pages as I added/deleted pages (they'd appear in the wrong places on all subsequent pages). Only when the master page MARGINS were set correctly (the magenta box in the image below) did my document flow correctly when pages were inserted/deleted mid-document.

I am very new to Illustrator and I need to fill a shape which is enclosed by two half circles with white. However, the circles are not connected, which means that trying to fill the inside fills the whole artwork.
In the image, you can see where I want to connect the two half circles, to be able to fill only the inside (everything left to that).
How can I connect the two end points with a round path? Using the Pen tool, I am only able to create straight paths, and I haven't managed to simply continue the circles round path. If you have an idea on how I can fill the inside in a different way, I am also very open.

I know there are a few questions regarding reducing image size while minimizing image quality, and my question relates to it, but I'm more concern about what the initial image size should be to minimize as much quality loss as possible.
For example, let's say I want to downsample an image to a size of 500x500.
To minimize as much quality loss as possible, is it best to find the highest quality resolution image of the biggest size, i.e. 1000x1000 or 5000x5000, etc., or somewhere near the size I want to resized to, i.e. 600x600 or 700x700, etc.?
My thought process is that if the number of pixels to downsample to is minimized, then the image quality is minimized, i.e. if I downsample a high-quality image of 600x600 to 500x500, then there is much less image quality loss then downsampling from 1000x1000 to 500x500.
Is my thinking wrong or can I get better insight in this?
: Re: Dashed line checked, but not working I’ve never made a dashed line before. Thought it would be simple enough: I went to stroke, checked dashed line and set my dash and gap on the stroke
Maybe your file is not set up to letter 8.5 x 11 and is too small and your dashes will not appear due to the size of the file.
: Re: Inkscape: Drawing a perfect circle in 2 point perspective Is there a way to draw a perfect circle in a 2-point perspective drawing in Inkscape? I'm looking for a way that I don't need to
you copy your perspective rectangle
you rotate the copy to sit horizontally on the ground
you skew that copy, so that the bounding box is a rectangle
you draw a circle which fits at the bottom
convert to path, move the control points left, top and right to their place at the border and adjust the control tangentiales to the shape
you group shape and circle
skew the rectangle to the figure 2
rotate it to fit to figure 1, ungroup
It is easy to find the correct angle for rotation and skewing in step 7 and 8, if you align both objects by their center, first.
Maybe you get similar results, if you apply the procedure 4, 5 directly to figure 1.

Well, there is currently (CC 2018) an issue with this workflow. Importing as an image sequence imports as a video. But you'll have better luck as frame per layer, which is how gifs are opened. That way you can do things like get rid of duplicate frames and change how long that frame holds.
So if you want to do that, until Adobe makes a better workflow, export as a MOV with RGB+A. Import that into photoshop using import (not place or open) and then you can make those edits before doing save for web. PNG sequence should be able to do that, but it doesn't seem that you can.
This will keep your hard drive more cleaned up anyway because you'll have fewer files to keep track of.
Hopefully, they'll just add some gif image controls in AME some time. For now, the only way to export an animated gif is to use a tool they are calling legacy.

In Photoshop, since time began, when you selected text and then used the arrow keys on your keyboard you could see dynamically the text change on screen as you increased and decreased the point size. For some reason, that only the developers of Photoshop can explain, that feature has been turned off in CC 2018. Is there any way to turn that back on?
: Re: Is it possible to add new characters to a font? I've got a font called Lato, and I need to add the characters İ, Ğ, ğ, Ş and ş. How can I do this? 1st photo is the original. 2nd
In my experience this is both possible and straight forward, there's a comprehensive tutorial on the subject in the FontForge documentation here which refers to a menu option called "Build Accented Character" designed expressly for this purpose. This site is also useful for figuring out how the built characters should look.
I have never found any of this to be a complex undertaking and exporting the font is a pinch. FontForge may complain about various issues but remember those issues were already there when you opened the font and can be ignored.
Regarding hinting my suggestion would be modify the font and try it and see. I've never once had an issue with hinting being visibly wrong and I haven't touched it so I suspect you won't have a problem either.

: Re: How can I show the feelings of motion, distance, proximity, aggregation and segregation with dots? This is for our visual elements course, our teacher said to show these feelings or concepts
I would tell my students to look up the meanings of the words. Also, rather than look for one meaning, look for variations so that you have a broad understanding of the concept the word might be used to communicate.
You want to produce a graphic interpretation of the literal definition.
For example: If I choose the word "bright," you'd most likely choose a white square to represent it visually instead of a black square.
For your exercise(s), imagine you are looking out of a window down on a school playground. The playground is square, say. In the playground, are a bunch of children playing. (They are each one of the dots, metaphorically.)
For example: Where would all the students be (or end up) if I used the word(s) "Free candy here" indicating the centre of the playground? Hint: Substitute the dots for the position of the students. Would they be spread around the playground or gathered around the free candy?
: Re: What is the name for the kind of abbreviation that employs an underlined superscript to the terminal characters? Sometimes abbreviations are made by placing the terminal characters in superscript
This seems to be known as an Ordinal Indicator.
Here's the blurb for convenience, some formatting lost from Wikipedia like the actual subscripts:
In written languages, an ordinal indicator is a character, or group of characters, following a numeral denoting that it is an ordinal number, rather than a cardinal number.
In English orthography, this corresponds to the suffixes -st, -nd, -rd, -th in written ordinals (represented either on the line 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th or as superscript, st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th).
Also commonly encountered are the superscript (and often underlined) ordinal indicators º and ª, originally from Romance, but via the cultural influence of Italian by the 18th century widely used in the wider cultural sphere of Western Europe, as in 1º primo and 1ª prima "first, chief; prime quality".
The practice of underlined (or doubly underlined) superscripted abbreviations was common in 19th-century writing (not limited to ordinal indicators in particular, and also extant in the Numero sign №), and was also found in handwritten English until at least the late 19th century (e.g. "first" abbreviated 1st or 1st).
: Re: Change gradient colors in Inkscape How can I change the color from which to which the gradient should be changing in Inkscape?
Another approach is, when the gradient tool is selected and your blue line visible, to click on the starting point, the small circle, and select a color, and into the endpoint, the square, and select a second color.
When those marks are selected, they turn solid, to indicate selection.
A third way to do it: Select the area with gradient and then select the color dialog, the brush icon in the toolbar, "Filling and Contur". The current gradient should show up. Then hit the small pen symbol in the bottom part of the dialog "edit gradient". In the tool config bar, a combobox should appear "Stopps" with your colors. You can select one of them and change it in the color dialog. Then select the other one to do the same.
