@Cooney243

Once you've gone to the effort [or even before] of generating a nice drop-shadow, you could have a quick go at trying to match the perspective...

The can image was taken from far closer, with a shorter lens than the bottle.
The 'best' way to fix it would have been at the photography stage [& many other issues with the lighting, not least the mismatch, but also the glare on the metallics could have been handled a lot better]

As this is no longer an option, then you can try to fake it with liquify.
See how much curve the bottom of the can has, compared to the bottle. This is a direct result of the distance discrepancy.

In Filter/Liquify you can attempt to match the two curves...
This was literally one minute's quick attempt. You could do far better with the original source files & some less clumsy manipulation.

@TimTroiano 's work used as original.

Colour profile mismatch my fault, but I threw out the working file before I realised.

Something about this isn't quite right. I'm new to photoshop and tried messing around with Transform and Alt+Drag a bit but it still looks a bit off. Any suggestions?

PS.: You can also criticise the image in general. I'm trying to go for a dark environment with a flooded city in the background, where the bottle and what's in it are supposed to be a ray of hope. Any advice is greatly appreciated! !

I've created a logo in Illustrator CC for print in CMYK color mode. I've saved it as a PNG to import into my flyer I'm creating in InDesign.

However, the colors appear different. The logo in Illustrator has a green that is a lot duller than the same green (in CMYK values) in InDesign. Will they print the same even if they don't appear that way?

You actually don't need to do so. In the appearance panel just drag and drop your stroke under your fill. Make sure a color is applied to your fill.

@Cooney243

Try this one:

First, save your file as IDML.
Knowing that an IDML file is basically an archive of XML files, you can open it as an archive (using a (de)compression tool). Do not decompress it, just open the archive.
Open the Resources folder, then the Preferences.XML file.
In a text editor, look for

Intent="PrintIntent"

and change to

Intent="WebIntent"

or obviously, the other way round depending whether you want to change [Black] to RGB or CMYK.

Save in archive and reopen the IDML file in Indesign.
Hope that helps

Edit: Oh, and by the way, if you have tons of swatches, you may want to run a single line script to change them all to RBG or CMYK (or Lab, why not...)

app.activeDocument.colors.everyItem().properties = {space:ColorSpace.CMYK};

or

app.activeDocument.colors.everyItem().properties = {space:ColorSpace.RGB};

@Cooney243

Posted in: #Crop #Gif

I'm not sure how to actually ask - where to start. I've been using PS6 to make gifs for years. But there is one problem: if I make gifsets, where I need to crop different parts of different frames without having to copy the frames into a new document.

Now, I have twelve different frames, the first three need to be cropped in a different place than the others. How do I crop the first 4 frames in one go without touching the other frames - which need to be cropped in a different place. I usually have to copy the frames into a new document in order to crop them where they need to be cropped and then I have to copy all of them back together. It's a step that has been annoying me for ages.

I'm not even sure there is a way to do it, but if there is - maybe someone is able to explain it to me. I'd really appreciate it.

Thank you.

 query : Re: Problem with text wrap on multiple text colums/frames in InDesign this is my first post here. I have very basic project: one frame (image/color) with text wrap, and text frame with 2 columns

@Cooney243

This behavior is actually a long-standing well-known bug...

Here's my suggested fix:
First set the baseline grid increment to the same value that your body text leading.
Then go to Text frame options > First baseline offset options > Select Leading.
Of course, in order to apply the above setting to all pages, change it in your Master page!

Please note that since this fix will work only if baseline grid increment equals to text leading value, you can't use paragraph Space After half of leading value (which is something very usual and good-looking in my opinion). But as we can see in your screenshots, you don't use Space After, so this could fix your specific case.

EDIT: Another solution:
Again, give baseline grid increment same value than your leading.
Then set your image frame wrapping value equal to it, or any multiple value. (Using an object style could definitely be handy here).
Finally, when you expand image frame height, make sure it is snapped to baseline grid. Besides it will looks nicer.

@Cooney243

Here's the Indesign trick:

You can use the content collector in order to link the background image and the "bordered" one. Grab the background image with the content collector and import it as a link (Check "create link" box).
Go to Link Options in the links panel in order to prevent Aspect and Size to be updated if the background image changes.
The cool thing here is that is you replace your background image, just update links in the link panel to get this cool magnifying effect...

To create the image frame, use the transform panel to make the duplicated frame smaller. Again, duplicate it and finally use the pathfinder tool in order to remove the inside part.
Increase size ratio of the image (not the frame) to get the magnifying effect.

I have tried clearing overrides and manually choosing text, using paragraph styles, clearing out all indents, tabs, and other settings but I can't figure out what is causing it.

The gold date/time text is coming to the edge as expected but the thin font in paragraph in the middle is just not coming out to the end of the text box. There is room on the right for more words, but it breaks them before they get to the edge of the text box.

@Cooney243

Solution 1:
Use Grep find/change to remove anchored objects in your Toc. Find ~a (anchored object marker), replace by nothing.
Pros: super fast
Cons: You need to redo it every time you update the TOC

Solution 2:
If not done already, create an object style and apply it to all your anchored objects. It's not absolutely necessary, but will give you better control over all anchored objects, so I recommend you don't skip this step.
Then, go to object style options > anchored object options.
Change position from "inline" to "custom" and adjust position in order to get the same layout than initially. You'll probably have to make a few more adjustments (text warp, left indent, space before...).
The trick is than Indesign kinda "separate" anchored object from text paragraph when the objects aren't positioned "inline". Why? I don't know ^^ but it results that custom positioned objects do not show in Table of contents.
Pros: No need to redo anything while updating TOC. Anchored objects will always be ignored.
Cons: Much more time consuming method than solution 1

 query : Re: Arrow head brush distorted on a curved path I'm trying to create a dashed line with arrow heads along its length in Illustrator. I don't think it's possible to do just with dashed line options

@Cooney243

Another method would be to use a Scatter brush instead of a Pattern brush.

Create your arrow head, select it and create new Scatter brush. Select "Rotation relative to path".
Select your path, apply Scatter brush to your stroke, then go to Appearance panel and add a new dashed stroke.

The good thing about Scatter brush is that they don't distort.
The bad thing is that it will not adapt to the dash, meaning you'll end up with parts where arrow will overset dash, which will be quite inelegant.
Another issue will be that Scatter brush will start at the start of your path (logical isn't?) but we want it to end at the end really... Setting rotation to 180° will solve but that means you must start drawing your path from the end...
So it definitely isn't a perfect method, but it's worth mentioning it..

@Cooney243

Posted in: #AdobeIllustrator #Images #Scale #Transform

I'm assembling panels of multiple images in Illustrator CS5. The images are similar, but of slightly different sizes, therefore I put each image in a clipping mask, so the final sizes of clipped images are the same, so they can be arranged in a grid. The magnification of the images should be exactly the same, for example, I scale all the images to 5% and then I put them in a clipping mask.

I've made a grid of 2 x 2 images and then reused this grid, to put a different set of images inside the clipping masks. The four images in the initial grid were scaled to 5%, but when I relink an image inside the clipping mask and choose a different one, the scaling changes - as seen in this screenshot to 4.708% for this particular image:

So my question is: is it possible to re-scale the image(s) to exactly 5%? I tried Object-Transform-Scale, but the initial value is always 100%, so I would have to calculate percentage for each image separately, like 5/4.708*100% for the one in the screenshot. Is it possible to use an absolute scaling percentage for image transformation?

@Cooney243

Posted in: #AdobeIllustrator #Layers

I was wondering if there was any difference between having objects in layers or in sublayers. Why I am asking -- I always thought it was just a matter of organization and I could manipulate with both in the same way, but now when I applied the same operation to all elements in layer and then sublayer, it behaved differently:

I wanted to apply Transform each operation (only scale] on all objects of a layer. I selected them by clicking the "target" button on the right of layer name. It worked as expected -- elements were scaled, but didn't change their position.

However, then I needed to create a very similar layer so I decided to have these two layers as sublayers of a new LAYER. But suddenly when I selected all the objects of one sublayer and applied the same Transform each operation, it behaved as if it was grouped, therefore it not only scaled, but also changed position.

So could you please help me understand the difference? Are there other differences I haven't come across yet? Or can I change this behaviour in any way?

Thanks for any explanations, tips or helpful resources. :)
