@Courtney577

My Wacom tablet does not cooperate when I want to change hardness/size of my brush in photoshop.

It works with mouse and shortcuts on keyboard, but when I use alt and click the button on my pen (which is set to be a "right-click") and then I press it onto the tablet surface and go up and down to change these values it just keeps showing eye-dropper tool as if the right-click was not decteded, just alt.(then I press button on my pen to check if the right-click is waroking at all, and it is. The problem seems to be when I press alt and then a button on my pen).

I checked my wacom settings and they are deafault:

tip - one click
button closer to the tip - right-click
second button - double-click

It worked in the past...do you know what else to check to see why is it not working at all or me now?

I have been trying to find it without success. Do someone know if this exists and where it is?

 query : Re: How to do this effect in illustrator? Does anyone know how to do this text effect in illustrator? That stroke type?

@Courtney577

Right now I am seeing a combination of three different elements.

I would create text similar to the one you see here. For my example, I am just using some bold text.

The type has been warped to form an arc Effect > Warp > Arc . So now you could take text and apply this text.

Now you need to Extrude your text so Effect > 3D > Extrude & Bevel . This step you need to play with the settings in order to rotate your 3D text the correct way.

4.Now what I found is that when you expand the appearance of your text Object > Expand Appearance, you can then play with the colors of the objects, and also you can add the stroke to the white portion of your text.

So if you were to play around with those three effects on a piece of text, I think that you could achieve a similar result.

@Courtney577

Yes you can. But if you've really been looking for three years, then you should maybe accept something is very wrong.

Seeing how our industry is much more oriented towards portfolio quality than qualifications, I think its extremely unlikely your education is preventing you finding work. Indeed I know many graphic designers with no formal training at all that have no trouble getting work.

Principally your ability to find work should revolve around the quality of your portfolio, but of course that's not the whole story, and networking, interview skills, general interpersonal skills and more will be a factor.

I don't want to sound tough, but if you've been looking (really looking) for three years and have yet to breakthrough you should definitely consider another industry rather than going back to school. Not all the things you need can be taught in a classroom I'm afraid.

You have to rebuild it vector based with e.g. illustrator. if its a simple shape this shouldnt be a hard task. But a simple conversion is not possible

When I import the PDF it automatically gets opened as 20 different pages instead of 1 page. I understand that the height will be crazy long, but this suits my purpose.

My fix for 'removing' the shadow from the diagram:

I've looked around a bit for answers, and one solution was talking about putting effects on different layers, but I don't think such a solution will work for this problem. I've also tried to use the eraser to, but that doesn't seem to work on shadows (maybe it doesn't work on any effects).

This isn't a massive issue, but it would be nice to have a neater solution than what I've currently got, so any suggestions would be gratefully received :)

IMPORTANT: I dont know who the printer is or will be -- the PDF goes to an unknown layout person who will incorporate it in the publication (book). That would make it for offset printing I believe.

Background:
I do semi-technical illustrations which are used in publications. I never hear anything once I've sent off the figures -- until I see them in print. Till now these illustrations have only been B/W.

I now want to prepare full-colour PDFs which, I emphasise, will be given to an unknown layout person and printed somewhere unknown. So,
I'm wondering should I use no color profile -- or does it matter?

PDF dialog - color output. Preset is "Press Quality" changed to appropriate destination for "European Prepress 2" (see below).
I'm using save-as PDF in illustrator (CS4) preserving illustrator editing capabilities.

I am based in Europe, my color settings in illustrator are set to:
"Europe prepress 2"

Document color mode is CMYK.
All inks are (perecntages of) CMYK.

FWIW I'm self-taught i.e. ignorant of many things I probably should know.
TIA for any help!

This answer is for USA, I am unsure of other countries billboard standards.

14' H x 48' W is common for traditional print billboards.

Some other sizes

Standard Sizes

14' H x 48' W
10’ H x 40’ W
10’6” H x 36’ W

Spectacular Sizes

20’ H x 60’ W
16’ H x 60’ W

Source: OAAA - Bulletins

A digital billboard will have different specs.

Companies own billboards, so if you want to place an ad at a certain location then you contact who owns that billboard. They will then give you specs on that particular billboard.

@Courtney577

I am working with a couple of companies in different industries where we will be making a single design for all companies where we are all represented equally in the design. We all have different branding guidelines.

1 of the companies is insisting we use their font choice, for my situation they want to use a specific font. Personally I don't want to use their font since I am the one putting it together and I have used a font I think is more appropriate for the design space. In retrospect, their request is to use Century Gothic and I would like to use Gotham Condensed Medium, so not too drastic.

Is this something I should fight? Say, since we are all equal in the design, part of each of our branding guidelines does not apply.

@Courtney577

I'm fairly certain that’s impossible.

A really hacky and weird pseudo-solution would be to turn on “Zoom in on selection” under “Canvas” in the app settings, and then chose a layer element in the layer list that is on the top of the artboard and zoom in on it to have Sketch jump to that area. But I’m sure that's not a satisfactory solution, haha.

@Courtney577

Is there a possibility (using plugins or otherwise) to sort artboards in the layer list in Sketch based on their position from left to right?

Use case:

I’m designing an app flow with artboards going from left to right in the Sketch canvas. I want to number them all descending without doing it manually (ie. ‘Screen-1’, ‘Screen-2’ …). For the naming I’m using Rename It. However, it bases the numbering on the order in the layer list. When the artboards going left to right in the canvas aren’t matched with the same order in the layer list, the numbering gets all messed up.

Is this even possible to solve automatically?

 query : Re: Create an animation of a slider-crank mechanism system I'm trying to create an animation of a slider-crank mechanism system in AE, but I'm finding it difficult to create a move closer to a

@Courtney577

Based in comment stib

The setup is reasonably simple, built in functions, trigonometry and some Pythagoras will get you there. Have a look at the diagram below:

The orange solid is the crank, with its anchor point shown at the bottom. Its rotation drives the whole thing (you could drive it from the piston, but this is probably easier(?)). In your diagram the crank isn't shown, so you can just use a solid, and make it a guide layer. Attached to the crank is a null called pivot, lined up to the where the crank and piston are attached to each other, with the crank as its parent. I use that to save myself a little bit of maths, The green solid is the piston, its anchor point is at the top, lined up with the blue solid.

Now to find the position of the piston we have to find Yc, x, and Yp. That will also allow us to find the angle ϴ.

First we need to find the position of the pivot. Fortunately we can use the built-in function toComp. That will return the absolute position of the pivot null. If we subtract the position of the crank we're left with [x, Yc].

Since we know the length of the piston—p in the diagram above—and the value of x, we can use Pythagoras' theorem to find Yp, because x² + Yp² = P², then it follows Yp = sqrt(P² - x²).

Putting it all together, plus some offsets to keep the piston lined up with the crank, we get this for the position expression on the piston arm:

var PistonLength = 200; //set this to whatever length your piston is
var crankPos = thisComp.layer("crank").transform.position;
var pivot = thisComp.layer("pivot").toComp(thisComp.layer("pivot").transform.anchorPoint, t = time) - crankPos;
var y = Math.sqrt(Math.pow(PistonLength,2) - Math.pow(pivot[0], 2));
crankPos + [0, pivot[1] - y]

Once we have the lengths of the sides of the triangle we can find the angle using trigonometry. We know that sin ϴ = x / P so ϴ = asin(x / P). Here's the expression:

var pistonLength = 200;
var crankPos = thisComp.layer("crank").transform.position;
var pivot = crankPos - thisComp.layer("pivot").toComp(thisComp.layer("pivot").transform.anchorPoint, t = time);
theta = Math.asin(pivot[0]/pistonLength);
radiansToDegrees(theta)

So in the diagram above these expressions are applied to the green solid on the position and rotation properties respectively.

The blue solid just has to line up with the green piston, but you don't want to parent it, or it will inherit the rotation. So just put this simple expression on its position property (obviously with all these expressions you need to change the names of the layers to match (or change your layer names):

thisComp.layer("piston arm").transform.position

Here's a screenshot of the comp, with all the expressions in place.

@Courtney577

There simply isn't a standard size

I know it's not the answer you want to hear, but it is the answer to this question.

One company might adopt a standard size, but that will be because that standard size worked for them dependent upon the layout and design of their invoices, the legibility and aesthetics of the logo at various sizes, and lots of other factors.
The fact remains, there is no global standard.

EDIT: I think it's worth pointing out (re @Digital Lightcraft comment) that of course if a particular company has developed a style guide then of course that will dictate the size of these things, so in that instance there will be a standard, but of course only for that specific company, and not, as OP was suggesting, globally.

There's not an option for making layers "Pixel Perfect" in photoshop,

@Courtney577

Posted in: #AdobeIndesign #Layout #PageLayout #Typesetting

I’ve typeset this huge book with unequal columns: text in the larger inside column, pics with captions in the smaller outside column.
The problem is that, of course, all the chapters are separate files so, when I finally make them into a book, some left hand pages become right hand (and vice versa), and nothing happens automatically except running headers and page numbers: the narrower column is sometimes inside and sometimes outside. So I HAVE to go through the whole book and start all over with the wretched columns, page by page or something? I just can’t figure it out. Sigh!

I've tried object align near/away from the spine and all sorts. Mac Mavericks and CS6.

I'm adding screenshots of how the book should look followed by how it looks when text is added on earlier pages. All I can think of is just setting one column for the text, and creating guides to place an image and then a text frame for the caption. I don't like to anchor the pic in the text because the pics have to be at the top of the page. If I anchor the pic to the text at the top of the page, then the text doesn't wrap around the pic (because the anchor has to be somewhere before the pic appears. drive.google.com/open?id=0B3qIjq87cSsDX2tUVlAyM0F4LTg

The only way that I can think to do this with a PNG is to image trace your file, then edit the result that you have expanded.

So, with your PNG selected in your file: Object > Image Trace > Make

Once it's made, you can then choose from a variety of options until you get the option that looks closest to your original PNG. From there, you want to expand and then tweak whatever needs to be tweaked to get it looking like the original file.

Other than this, I don't believe you can open a PNG and just edit the color in any Adobe programs.
