 query : Re: Illustrator CC: Extending shapes along a path I have a couple arrow shapes pointing at a given angle as shown in the image below. I'd like to extend both arrow points together, further along

@Cugini998

Since your arrows are shapes and not a path with a stroke and arrow head on it, you ill have to take the direct selection tool (white arrow) and select the 5 anchor points creating the arrow of each arrow [fist image from the left] and then drag them around or use the arrow keys to move them [second image].

Selecting an anchor point allows you to move only that point.

PS: You might want to figure out the angle of your arrows, create a
line at that exact angle and place it at the tip of one of the arrows
to guide yourself along that line when moving them.

@Cugini998

Reading of decription of erode in the gimp manual. Leads me to conclude that erode is just 1 px (square) filter → other → maximum. Looking at the video its either more likely minimum or he reverses the image after some applications of the effect.

But yes using maximum and then eventually reversing the image produces atleast mostly the same effect.

@Cugini998

For this sort of thing I'd definitely use modo in my workflow, because it's my 3D DCC of choice, though I'm certain Blender, 3DS, Maya or C4D would all do just as well (I prefer the artist-friendly workflows and the shader tree & nodal shading I get with modo) though I don't know that you can assume the client has 3D CAD files - for something like mattresses they may only have 2D CAD.

It'd be a trivial matter even then to extrude elements from their 2D files, and in my case in modo, instead of "cutting up" the resulting model to get a cross-section, I'd use a live Render Boolean or a live MeshFushion Boolean to get my section cut, so that I could, for example, animate the section cut to show the mattress being "extruded" in any video output, and/or in sheerly still output the client could direct where they want the section cut in realtime.

Surfacing the items to be photoreal is pretty simple these days, as most 3D DCCs support PBR materials; in some cases a client may prefer NPR (non-photo real) shaders - so cel shading and toon shaders to get an illustrative effect.

The other advantage to developing this in a real 3D DCC is that if later your client wants an animation showing the springs giving and recovering, the mattress layers squishing and expanding, you're halfway there if you develop your model well.

I have found that the usage calcs done by professional photographers helped me a lot in the past - here's a link to a resource I've used before:

AOP usage fee calculator

A typical dayrate for a decent professional photographer in the US right now (where I am at the moment) is ~ 00, so I start with that, and you should set based on the most common locally-applicable professional photographer's dayrate if your work is of high professional calibre.

Hope this helps mate.

Blender is open-source and freeware, and though there are a lot of competing high dollar value DCCs out there, it's worth remembering that Blender is actually used in a fair few pipelines in studios, because it's powerful, it works, and it often has newly developed tools and idea before some of the paid DCC apps.

That said, I myself don't use Blender much, I use modo as my DCC of choice - and for advanced texturing when I need super high detail beyond what I can do in modo and/or Affinity Photo or Photoshop, I go to Allegorithmic's Substance Painter.

Yes, you can achieve that quality of work yourself, without a team - just takes time, patience and acquiring skill.

@Cugini998

Two quick responses:

1) That "blur" is either anti-aliasing or non-pixel alignment: if alignment, your P.S. workflow will take care of it, though with a lot of extra work; if anti-aliasing, it won't.

2) No, that is not how most of us handle icon design: we tend to use vector based apps which support multi-res output: my toolkit includes Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, Affinity Designer, Inkscape, Sketch, and on iPad Pro Concepts.

I mostly use Affinity Designer for icon work at this point, which has a powerful export persona with multi-res slice definitions allowing me to design the icon, and in one click, set up exports for icons of all appropriate resolutions and formats for Mac OS, Windows, iOS and Android.

As has been pointed out above, you can use Adobe Photoshop to create vector artwork, but it's not the primary usecase for the app, and so it's clunky and cludgey; given the low pricepoint, (29€ for eternal license) for me Affinity Designer was a no-brainer given its power.

@Cugini998

For a line the following holds true (but not many other shapes). Center of bounding box is equal to center of line. Now if we simply modify this script:
#target illustrator

var doc = app.activeDocument;
var sel = doc.selection;
var rad = 10;

for(var i = 0; i < sel.length; i++){
if(sel[i].typename == "PathItem"){
var obj = sel[i];
var center = obj.position;
center[0] += obj.width/2.0;
center[1] -= obj.height/2.0;
doc.pathItems.ellipse(
center[1]+rad,center[0]-rad,
2*rad, 2*rad,
false, false
);
}
}

Select red lines and run (with extendScript Toolkit).

Or you can do this fully automatically without a script just select the red lines:

(optional, see below) duplicate them
apply convert to shape ellipse, set values to absolute.
(optional) Expand

done. Alternatively you can just add another stroke on the line with a ellipse conversion, then no duplicate is needed

When you make the Image Trace, open up the Image Trace Panel, Show the Advanced section and check the Ignore White checkbox. This should make Illustrator ignore the white areas, making them holes in the black shapes instead.

If you don't want to make the trace again, you can subtract the white parts from the black parts using the Minus Front button in the Pathfinder Panel, when you have two shapes selected.

Normally you dont need more than 150-200 dpi on walls like this since the human visual aquity is based on distance*. Especially if text is vector anyway. People dont normally stand right next to booth walls the same way they would read a magazine. But if your getting paid then i think claiming disk is full is a bit ridiculous just buy more disk and/or move some stuff out.

* Most large scale poster adds, like the ones you see at a bus stop for example are only at 150 DPI for image elements. Or pure vector graphics.

 query : Re: How Do I Export A Halftone From Illustrator For Web? I created a small email invitational and for the picture treatment I used bitmap halftones I created in Photoshop, saved out as PNGs, and

@Cugini998

Your problem could be the following:

Bitmap halftones are normally used for print. They are usually made at a very high resolution (+1200ppi), so each raster dot can seem round when printed.

When you downscale your image to the monitor's 72ppi the halftone pattern gets so dense that it appears as a black square. The resolution is not high enough to render the individual dots.

The solution is to use a lower frequency when creating the halftone images.

If you want the exact same halftone on all the placed images, you have to make sure that they are placed at the same resolution, and that you have used the same frequency when converting to bitmap halftone.

An easy way to ensure this would be to create the full collage in Photoshop and add the halftone screen on the finished image.

Your options are:

1- Close D

2- If the action doesn't modify the original document, apply the action to all the documents and delete the output of D.

3- Put A, B and C in a folder and apply the action to the files in that folder.

No, the tool is useless* if you want any other angle than the ones given for you. You can on the other hand do it with the rotate effect, but due to not having a way to place the pivot and depth it is also not generally useful for making 3d objects, although it is far better.

Since you are in UK the 3 year compound inflation is 4.28-5.31%* since you added 2.6% for inflation for this year only then the net result is that your price hike was only about 2.6%. Which is not much considering you gave non inflation adjusted prices for interim sounds like very moderate price hike.

I wouldn't explain unless the client asks. But then my current clients dont pay anything for my services**, and its been a long time since ive had to do this.

** Essentially somebody else pays for them and i negotiate against that unit. Use Smart Objects

Create your 16x16 document and add whatever layers you need.
Select all layers, right-click and select Convert To Smart Object.
Resize the document to 64x64 pixels.
Now double-click the Smart Object, and it will open as a .psb in its own window.
Now select Window > Arrange > 2-up Vertical to see the original 16x16 document alongside the upscaled 64x64 version.
Now you can preview and edit both versions.

NOTE: Every time you make changes to the nested Smart Object, you need to save it to update the "mother" document.

This technique is not limited to scaling. Another good use is when you need to make a grayscale or CMYK image from an RGB image. Then you could nest the RGB image inside the grayscale/CMYK image to keep everything editable.

Use the rotate tool in conjunction with holding alt, then repeat. The steps are following.

Create 1 text placeholder, make it either right or left aligned depending on the way you want to align the text.
Activate rotate tool, place the center gizmo, Alt drag it where you want the next text (alt enables copy).

Alternatively, you can alt click and type in the rotation amount this is good if you know you want to spread 10 items in 45 degree angle for example then type 45/10 or -45/10 (depending on if you want a counterclokwise or clockwise rotation)
Transform again until l you have enough placeholders.
