@Fox8124981

The HTTP protocol that is used to load websites by your browser supports a "Host" header which tells the server which hostname was typed into the url bar of the browser. This way, the same server (same IP) can handle different websites.

Imagine www1.example.com and www2.example.com both resolve to 127.0.0.42.

The Server on 127.0.0.42 on port 80 listens to HTTP requests. If you open www1.example.com in your browser, the browser connects to 127.0.0.42:80 and sends the Host: www1.example.com header along with the request. This way the server can serve the site for www1.example.com.

If you enter www2.example.com, your browser also connects to 127.0.0.42:80, but this time sets the Host: www2.example.com header, thus the sever knows that this time it has to serve the other page.

If you open 127.0.0.42 in your browser, the server will get the Host: 127.0.0.42 header along with the request. This time the server may not know which site to serve, so it may present an error, or fall back to a default website. This is why you may see a different site if you browse to the IP instead of the hostname.

I had the same issue, and I use this now:

AuthType Basic
AuthName "Protected area"

Require expr "%{ENV:HTTPS} !~ /on/i"
Require valid-user

RewriteEngine On

# Redirect alias to preferred hostname
RewriteCond expr "! %{HTTP_HOST} -strmatch '%{SERVER_NAME}'"

# Redirect to RewriteCond expr "%{ENV:HTTPS} !~ /on/i"
RewriteRule ^ %{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} [L,R=301]

Basically it grants access if is used, but redirects all requests to in this case.
I use "%{ENV:HTTPS} !~ /on/i" because I found some systems (e.g. behind SSL terminating proxies) don't set HTTPS to "off" as apache does with , or set it to "on" instead of "On" with . I also added the redirect to the SERVER_NAME, in case somebody wants it. I don't have a certificate for all my legacy aliases, so it is essential to redirect to the default hostname first in this case.

@Fox8124981

Posted in: #Apache #Authentication #Htaccess

I'm looking for away to eliminate the intrusive instant prompt for credentials when basic authentication is used and instead serve a nice page that tells the user where he is and what credentials to use if he wants to proceed.

I came up with this simple .htaccess:

# .htaccess in /auth/ of DocumentRoot
AuthType Basic
AuthName "Protected Area"
AuthUserFile /path/to/htdocs/auth/.htpasswd
<RequireAll>
# Grant access to unauthenticated users via GET
# Warning!!! Make sure redirect to "logininfo.html" works!!!
Require expr "%{HTTP:Authorization} == ''"
Require method GET HEAD OPTIONS
</RequireAll>
Require expr "%{REQUEST_URI} == '/auth/loginfail.html'"
Require valid-user

ErrorDocument 401 /auth/loginfail.html

RewriteEngine On
# show unauthenticated users a nice login info page
RewriteCond expr "%{HTTP:Authorization} == ''"
RewriteRule .* logininfo.html

It grants access without authentication when HTTP Authorization header is empty for GET/HEAD/OPTIONS requests.
All unauthenticated requests are handled by logininfo.html
POST requests (e.g. Login Button) require authentication, thus trigger the credentials prompt.

It works, but I think it is kind of risky and counter intuitive to generally grant access for users that don't authenticate. But I think it is okay in this case. Is there a security risk with this solution I've overseen?

I would also be interested in a solution for serving my logininfo.html with HTTP 401/403 instead of 200. Thanks.

@Fox8124981

I have managed to resolve the issue.

Step One:

When you first see the 'Internet Security Warning', select 'View Certificate'.

Step Two:

What you then need to do, is identify who the Certificate has been issued to. Refer to the below image, for where to find this information. Once you have identified the location, copy the entry exactly as is.

Step Three:

Head into your Outlook and then head into File > Account Settings > Account Settings. You should then be on a page, which looks something like:

Simply select one of your emails by double clicking on the relevant account.

Step Four:

Referring to Step Two, simply paste in the 'Issued to' information into the Incoming mail server and Outgoing mail server(SMTP) text boxes, as highlighted in the below image.

Step Five:

All that is left to do now, is to click 'Next' and continue as you would normally. Then repeat the process for the other emails.

Where I was going wrong, was that I had mail.domain.com entered into the Incoming and Outgoing server text boxes. This was ok for a while, since I hadn't installed an SSL Certificate onto my server but now that I have an SSL Certificate, I needed to change my entries, to reflect the name of my server, which the SSL Certificate was installed on.

So far I failed getting 404 in the subrequest asking for that resource.
When I manually enter the desired url in address bar or edit request it succeeds and returns the resource. Given these circumstances I assume the problem is in redirection, so I googled a lot and found solution that is supposed to work, but it doesn't.

@Fox8124981

Posted in: #Ranking #Seo #Url #Usability

I have spent some time on SEO, recently, focusing on site architecture and domain URL structure. Logically, they go hand in hand. Through the many contradictions, the two consistent theories are:

Domain URLs should be semantically structured. For example:www.example.com/product-parent-category/product-child-category/product-name
The weight distribution of Keyword importance, is distributed from left to, within a URL structure. First directory carrying the greatest weighting, the second, a little less and so on.

With the above in mind, I performed a search for Aprons. Once I had gone past the big international players, I started to come across the smaller independent retailers.

There was one particular website, which ranked the highest, once the international players had been discarded. Their URL structure was:

example.com/collections/aprons/

I visited their website and could see they had a 'Kitchenware' range with the following URL:
example.com/pages/kitchenware/

This page, housed all of the other Child Product Categories. 'Coasters' and 'Cups' etc. I selected 'Aprons'. I was expecting to be taken to:
example.com/pages/kitchenware/aprons/ with Breadcrumbs to support this structure and as a 'Where am I now' feature. I was not. Instead, I was taken to example.com/collections/aprons/ The very link which appeared in the search results.

For me, this is not great user experience. Not awful, as it kind of makes sense, but not great; as the user's 'thought process' is disrupted since 'Aprons' does not continue on from 'Kitchenware'.

This approach has been applied to much of the website. Whilst it does not seem to be the 'perfect' approach, in my eyes, many of the products are competing well in the SERP. Leading to me believing I am overlooking something. The only conclusions I can think of, are as follows:

example.com/collections/kitchenware/aprons/ makes greater sense and provides a better user experience than example.com/collections/aprons/. 'Aprons' is further down the URL in example.com/collections/kitchenware/aprons than example.com/collections/aprons. Therefore, the latter's variation has had greater weighting to 'Aprons'.
Therefore, where the shorter URL lacks user experience, it makes up for it through the greater weighting to 'Aprons' being applied.

Of course, domain structure is not the only part of the SERP algorithm. Therefore, it could just be that the website is performing well in all the other SERP requirements, which compensates for their 'poorer' structured URL.

To conclude, let's assume that all on page and off page SEO/content is identical. Which URL structure would likely perform better?

example.com/collections/aprons/ www.example.com/collections/kitchenware/aprons/

Why?

You can have 'Kitchen Aprons', 'Medical Aprons', 'Mechanic Aprons' etc. The first domain would simply bundle them all together; albeit with the possible use of a Faceted Navigation. With the second URL approach, you can have dedicated Product Categories for 'Kitchenware', 'Medicalware', 'Industrialware' etc with the Child Category 'Aprons' within.

Ultimately, is there something I may be overlooking as to why the highlighted website, would approach their URL structure like this?

Caveat

Upon checking out Google's Keyword Planner, it is fair to say that there are more searches for 'Aprons' rather than 'Kitchenware'. Given that the weight distribution is applied from left to right, in a URL structure, I can see how example.com/collections/aprons/ can be effective even if it does not provide the greatest logical setup across the website. Is this where the trial and error approach comes into play?

@Fox8124981

'Average time on page' is quite a misleading metric by default. GA infers time on page by comparing the a hit time stamp with the following page view.

For the final page view in a session, the time on page will always be 0 seconds because there is no consecutive page view time to compare with. GA excludes these supposed '0 second page views' (exits) when calculating the average time on page.

My guess is that your 'view' events are not 'non-interaction ' events - so google treats them like page views, factoring them into time on page calculations. As many users will leave your single page app after browsing a publication, I would suggest that the 'view ' events are actually improving the accuracy of your time on page metric by showing which page views actually lasted 0 seconds, and which involved interactions, I.e 'view' events.

If for some reason you want to return to the old page view duration tracking, start tracking the events as 'non interaction' events ( this is a tick box in Google Tag Manager, I haven't done it directly via GA, so you'll have to search for instructions).

This to me seems like an important indicator of how valuable a group of pages are — but I can't find any simple way of viewing these numbers, without manually finding the number of pages and setting the information out on a spreadsheet. I've been searching Google for a solution but have had no luck.
