: Re: InDesign or Illustrator for package design? I was debating with my students this week about which software to submit their files in for my package design class. A few advantages of InDesign
I've worked at as an in-house designer for a publisher with it's own very large press, as well as a designer and art director for larger agencies, creating work for international clients (coke, mcdonalds, lipton), and I think you are spot on in your assessment of the programs & their use.
Illustrator is excellent for vectors, which is what printers are all about, but sucks at handling raster images.
Photoshop isn't ideal for print stuff, but people accomodate it due to it's widespread use as the #1 design program.
Indesign isn't a great creation tool, but does a great job at consolidating color profiles, keeping working vectors & laying out images. It's especially great for packaging because it's masters allow the creation of templates for consistency across product labels.
I've actually experienced situations where printers prefer illustrator exclusively because of the preflight plugins for it. Realistically, its more laziness because they can just as easily make any prepress adjustments off an appropriately exported PDF.

you can use the BLEND function to do this;
Create a blend between 2 circles : Object > Blend > Make
Set the blend options to set distance etc. : Object > Blend > Blend Options
Create the shape you want the blend to follow (in your example a bigger circle)
select your blended path and the shape you want the blend to be applied to and REPLACE SPINE : Object > Blend > Replace Spine.
: Re: I'm making a multi-layer stencil. How can I keep the threshold of each layer live? I am trying to make a multi-layer stencil effect in PS CS6. How I got here: 1. Made several copies of
So the solution is the following:
Basically for each layer of the stencil, I first convert layer to Smart Object, and then:
I add the Threshold Adjustment Layer - making sure the "Clip to Layer" icon is checked. This can be changed, since it's a live adjustment.
I double-click the layer: Layer style > Blending options >Blend if > Adjusting the grey slider until the white of the Threshold effect disappears, leaving only the black. (holding ALT while clicking the slider, allows a range to be set, this allowing a threshold level range to be chosen)
Then I add a Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer to change the black it into any grey/colour I want.

Let's say I have created one photoshop document with 3 layers. (visible in the image I posted).
I am going to use these maps in a 3d-modeling program, so it is very important that I need to have these files to be seamless in the exactly similar way.
I know that I can use the "Offset" filter and then "clone stamp tool" to make one image to be a seamless pattern, but the problem with that is that I need to have all the layers exactly similar way to be seamless. Otherwise, the texture won't work. With manual clone stamping, I cannot find it be possible. So is there someone who knows how this can be achieved?
Here is also an image of how these are being used. You can see the seam in the render quite clearly in the middle of the rendering viewport editor.

I photograph crafts I've made and turn them into collages to share online. Usually I accomplish this by unlocking the background layer on one photo and copying all the other photos into the same document, then mushing them around till I have a nice display.
Using this method I've essentially gotten rid of my background layer, which leaves me with a transparent background. I can throw a new solid fill layer back there, but resizing the canvas doesn't fill in the edges of this new layer like a background layer would, requiring me to re-fill it.
Is there a way to mark / make a new layer as a background layer so that it retains the properties of a default Photoshop background layer?
I am on a Windows computer if this is something that involves keyboard shortcuts.
Note: I know the described workflow is horrible but this was the easiest way I could think of to illustrate this scenario. I'm not looking for better workflows. I specifically want to know if I can create a default background layer.

: Re: Cut Rounded Triangle Into 2 Equal Halves And Fill 2 Different Colors I want to divide a rounded triangle into 2 equal halves vertically and then fill 2 different colors in the two halves.
Use a guide to mark the center line, then use a rectangle to draw over one side, select all and use Pathfinder > divide tool. Then un-group, delete extra part of rectangle, and you should have two equal parts of the triangle you can color.
Ok here is how to make the triangle and then split it.
Again start with some guides.
then draw the basic shape without any round corners.
then get your selection tool.
hold down ctrl, and click on the circles on the corners you want to round.
you will have to play with the radius you give each corner to fit your shape
then refer to the above instructions on how to split the triangle in half
: Re: Sketch how to export all symbols to file system, while keeping hierarchy How do you export all symbols into folders in the file system based on their hierarchy in Sketch? For example, how do
It looks like you've set up your naming conventions correctly. Now you just have to make sure that your symbols are exportable. Select your symbol artboards and click "make exportable". Then choose the file format of your choice.
With that done, you should be able to export all the symbols to the destination of your choice and sketch will automatically format them into that folder filing system.
Hope that helps!

I design a 32 pages (excluding cover and back) A5 (A4 folded to center) booklet.
While designing, I put page 1-2 in one A4 landscape format artboard, 3-4 in another, 5-6 in another, and so on.
When I sent it to print, they want me to re arrange because according to them for each printed page, page 1 should have page 32 on the other half. Page 2 should have page 31 on the other half. and so on.
I use illustrator in this booklet. Most of the artboard contains linked image that span from page1-page2.
Is there any quick way to cut and transfer half of artboard to another to rearrange the pages?
Any idea what would be the quickest way to do this?

I created a symbol with a picture inside that has proportions of a rectangle. Here how it looks:
When I'm creating instances of this symbol and want to change the picture using symbol overrides the picture gets distorted because it scales to the proportions of the one in the master symbol.
I suppose I have to create a nested symbol for each phone but I'm not sure it's the most productive way of doing it.
How can I quickly and effectively use symbol overrides to place images that have different proportions?

: Re: Recommendation for Helvetica-like font with excellent distinguishability I am looking for a recommendation for a font which has certain properties. It is for use in figures in a scientific publication.
One very nice (if you ask me) option is IBM’s new set of fonts called Plex. The family includes both a sans-serif, a serif, and a monospaced variant, all with excellent distinctiveness (1/I/l and O/0 are easily distinguished and it has both dotted and slashed alternates available for zero), and the entire family is free and open-source.*
At the moment, only Latin-script languages are supported (though the family does support a wide variety of diacritics), but more are in the works (Cyrillic is nearly done; Greek, Arabic, Hebrew, Hindi, and Thai will kick-off soonish; CJK will follow some time in mid-2018). Sadly no small-caps (yet).
You can download it through FontSquirrel or straight from the IBM GitHub where it’s hosted.
* Or at least it will be open source. The actual source files that you can use to compile your own fonts from scratch won’t be available until 2018, though all the compiled font files are available now.

You didn't screw up, getting a foot in the door is the hardest part. It's good the clients asking for examples.

: Re: How do you make a picture look like it's coming out of a circle? How do you make a picture look like it's coming out of a circle? Like this:
Tons of different ways to achieve this. Given the nature of the question, I will share a simple approach.

Using the "Polygonal Lasso Tool", cut the cat/dog out of the
With the subject cutout, on a new layer, create a circle using the Ellipse tool. This tool will allow you to add color, borders,
shadows to both the inside and stoke of the shape. You will want to
make the circle smaller than the subject cutout so it gives the
illusion of coming out of the circle.
With the shape created on one layer and the subject cut out, make sure the subject layer is above the circle layer and drag it on
top of the circle you created.

I want to be able to select objects under other objects in Inkscape.
After watching a few tutorials I noticed that designers achieve this by clicking at the place where the object is under another object while using a selector tool and pressing Alt. I tried it and it did not work out. What may I have missed while doing the procedure?
At the last screenshot I am pressing Alt, using the selector tool and click at the place where the ellipse is under the rectangle. But I end up with a rectangle being chosen.
I noticed that clicking twice, while pressing Alt does the job. Is it supposed to be so? Should I always click twice?

Could someone, please, explain me dumb proof what is a clip set and what is a clip release?
I learned how to make an inner shadow in Inkscape using Clip->Set, but I am still confused what is happening when I apply it.
I read the article. And from it I started to think that Clip Set just an operation which finds the intersection of two provided objects and deletes the upper. And it is seems to be so, because it does not contradict to how I created the inner shadow. And article did not manage do explain me what the Clip Release is.
So, does Clip Set really just the intersection which deletes the upper object and what is Clip Release?

I have a basic 2 page form, converted from a word document.
I gather that I must use the TouchUp Reading Order panel to draw boxes around the content and specify its type (Text, Form Field etc) and order.
My main issue is that it keeps merging my boxes together e.g. sequential radio buttons get merged into one Form Field even though I have only drawn the box around one. It is incredibly frustrating.
I'm also unclear as to exactly what I should be selecting. Take this for example:
14 is a radio button which I assume is to be Form Field, but what about 11 and 13, are these text or Form Field? And 12, which is a textbox, this is to be Form Field too right?
Appreciate any help

if anyone else is looking for a quick way to locate or zoom to a selection / layer in the viewport, you can do this without scripts in Illustrator CC by creating an automated Action.
Works on text too!
Use the Insert Menu Item... option in the drawer menu to choose or type these steps instead of recording them.

What this does is
Resize the current artboard to your selection
Zoom viewport in on the modified artboard (Ctrl + 0)
Undo and change the artboard back!
