I am writing some html to go in a mail to be sent to internal users programatically. They all use Outlook 2016. (Coding for Outlook is horrific, as simple things like CSS backgrounds don't work. As such I'm stuck with coding html like it's the 90's.)

The content is kind of a flowchart, and it needs to be visible in the mail client as the users won't bother clicking a link to take them to an external page. As it is Outlook I am doing everything with tables. Basically, everything graphical is a table cell, but I need to add arrowheads. i have done this by coloring the background of the cell and "capping it" with a white on transparent arrowhead cutout.

I'm pretty much there, except for a really annoying bug where on some, but not all of the arrows, there is a 1px line to the left of the arrowhaed. (The ones in the picture with red arrows pointing to them.)

My arrowhead image is the same width as 2 x my column width, and the code is as follows to make a row with 2 arrowheads (I'm using 36 columns, as the design is based on a 12 column grid, but then I need to be able to split down cells further in order to make the arrows):

<tr>
<td class='blank' colspan=8></td><td class='shaft' colspan=2>Y</td><td class='blank' colspan=8></td>
<td class='blank' colspan=8></td><td class='shaft' colspan=2>N</td><td class='blank' colspan=8></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td class='blank' colspan=8></td><td class='shaft' colspan=2><img src='http://www.amstaffportal.com/images/email_resources/arrowhead.png' /></td><td class='blank' colspan=8></td>
<td class='blank' colspan=8></td><td class='shaft' colspan=2><img src='http://www.amstaffportal.com/images/email_resources/arrowhead.png' /></td><td class='blank' colspan=8></td>
</tr>

And the relevant CSS is shown here:

td {
background-color: #82d0f5 ;
height: 48px;
border-right: 6px solid white;
padding: 6px;
word-break: break-all;
}
td.blank {
background-color: white;
padding:0;
height: 24px;
}
td.shaft {
background-color: #82d0f5 ;
padding: 0px;
vertical-align:bottom;
height: 24px;
border-left: 1px solid white;
}
img {
width:100%;
display:block;
}

How do I get rid of the troublesome line on the left?

I used Illustrator's effect "Extrude & Bevel ..." on some svg-icons. Before exporting, I use "Object - Expand..." which results in many shapes on top of each other.

Usually you have to subtract the surfaces from each other, but I do not know why.

Is it really necessary to strip all surfaces from each other? If so, why? Or should I not use "Object - Expand..."?

This is like coding basis right? A mathematical if clause like that in a program. I have focused on graphic design but have little background on software coding so I just give my combined know how for this. Forgive me if i might mislead you but I just give you some base point to start from. Just try it if it can help you.

Since you are getting the colors in flat files or jpegs. It is better to get the figures from hexadecimical colors. If a sampled color is less than or equal; it should give the value of a specific hexadecimal value of a color. The shades will follow. then narrow it down by selecting the colors you want to retain. Try to see the function of the Vector Magic program to see what I ment.

Is there anyway I can make the GIF without changing the size?

I've used both ways, inkscape is a really finicky program sometimes so I like to be able to do things more than one way, but either way works well. I usually work with my inset outset settings at 0.02" and that seems to work as well.

@Karen819

I would recommend reviewing customization options for available Square Space templates before going in the direction of custom design. If you get too creative in Photoshop, you might not be able to execute it on Square Space.

Keep in mind that Square Space, Wix and other companies offering free web authoring are essentially hosting companies, and make their money by tying clients to their own proprietary templates and platforms. They are ok for quickly deploying template-based sites but are not meant to support custom web projects.

@Karen819

You can easily verify this by zooming '1:1' (keyboard shortcut '1') this set the zoom correction factor to match the current monitor resolution (you draw by resolution of monitor - not graphic tablet features).

You can lock this with the lock icon (from grids).

@Karen819

Inkscape get all font list when starts. Then problems come when you try to add new fonts if you don't use right permissions (linux OS) , bad locations (Wiondos AppData folders - from install of inkscape software) or something else.

One example: to install the .ttf files use right clik into explorer and use Install from menu.

If you want a script to parse all your fonts then Inkscape let you using scripting languages to create new Inkscape functionality.

Is it possible in Adobe Photoshop, via Adjustment Layers or Scripting or some other means, to enable an alternate processed view of the working document?

Ideally some kind of two-up view, where the alternate view is visible alongside the main document and updates in realtime. But a keypress/buttonclick to toggle between views would work too.

To give an example, say my working file is a 16x16 RGB icon. I want to edit the file at 16x16 in RGB, but I want a quick preview available of how it would look at 64x64, grayscaled and thresholded, with some 64x64 mask applied to it.

If it was simply converting to grayscale and thresholding, I could use adjustment layers and toggle their visibility on/off to get my preview. It's the upsizing and applying a mask at that size, which I don't know how to do.

Is it possible somehow, perhaps with scripting?

I'm creating a poster with an image as background, text in the middle, and faux border that I did with just the pen tool, no fill, stroke at 10 px, black and style is watercolor brush. I want both the faux border and text's fill be the background image and the rest plain white. However, all I'm ending up with is a cut out of the border and the text and the rest of the background still there.

This is what I keep ending up with

I would actually like the transparent part -- the text and border -- (shows as white) to be filled/clipped as the background image and the rest to just be plain white/transparent. I'm able to clip just the text, but not the faux border. Any suggestions? Thanks

I am terrible at keeping them organized. My computer is a mess. I believe this is because I simply cannot find a good system to stick to. (I am super organized in the real world, where I have a good system.)

@Karen819

I use this answer a while with other qustion maybe it can help you too/two :-)

1) Ai file is absolutely perfect. -Use CYMK colors

2)Pantone is OK It is more reliable. This way you are on the same page with the printer. What pantone color you see on your monitor and what pantone they will see or use in printing.

3)Gradients are ok especially if you give them you full vector. NOT in PDF form because it will be chopped chopped into lines. this also apply in dropshadows.

4) EPS is also ok with your color settings.

5) DPI setting is printers job. You dont have to worry. Just set your resolution in 300ppi. Make sure you give them also the Edittable files for JPEGS PNG or PSD FIles. Just embed them first in illustrator If they want to make it more clear atleast they have the raw files.

6) The Higher resolution the better. But too high because it will have big file size and the prepress will open and close it in slow speed. 300-350 ppi is my recommended settings.

7) a) Outline ALL your texts if possible. It will be the BEST help you can give for the Prepress person. It is ok for the Generic fonts like Arial but in some special font you better it will be in outline form because it is already set. b) If you want it Edittable Just keep your a personal copy/backup or GIVE all the fonts (.ttf or softcopy) you use in the artwork.

8) As mentioned PMS or Pantone Matching System is Good because it will as accurate as sharing same monitor to them. We can see it in Pantone colors perfectly if it is in Vector file e.g. AI,PDF, EPS, SVG, .CDR

9) If your affraid for the copyright issue (which i personally Do when designing materials). Set aside it. Prepress people are too busy to copy all files. We appreciate more if you trust us. If we see your artwork is beautiful and Perfectly done,we will try our best to make the print out the best way as you see it. Seeing your good artwork printed good will be our reward as Prepress designers.

It all depends on the software you use to design & invitation delivery method. If you can update your question to include the software(s) you use to design & invitation delivery method:

But never the less, here are some options:

1- Web Page: create your web page & dynamically update the names (and any other text) using url parameters (with php or javascript).

2- Web form using Wordpress or Google Forms. With wordpress the client can receive a simple email response when the invitee submits data.

3- Using indesign & a spreadsheet. Adobe documentation linked below helpx.adobe.com/indesign/using/data-merge.html

@Karen819

You could specify tracking in case the client would like to create more similar letterings (eg. sub brand or service...) In the future.

The unit is expressed as one thousandth part of em (where em is font-size relative and for a 10pt font it's 10pt), so you can specify it as tracking: -25 * em / 1000. Or you can calculate it and say it's -0.4pt.

Adobe mentions 1/1000 em, see the following doc

You can't, GIMP's text layers and text tool do not support adding links to text at this point. You can style text to look like some commonly recognized representation of a link - e.g. blue and underlined - but there won't be any special functionality.

Also, GIMP is not really meant to be used as a PDF creator or editor application. Only the very recent development versions have brought some improvements to PDF export, but this is still far from what other tools offer.

You are better off to use applications more specialized to work with documents rather than individual images - Scribus and LibreOffice are two examples of Free Software tools which can be used to create PDF documents from scratch (you didn't specify whether you want to edit an existing PDF file, please clarify this in your question). Actually, many current word processors should preserve links if they offer to export to PDF.
