@Kimberly620

Its not in the family of axonometric projections. So it is either in the family of perspective, some random projection or it is not a projection at all.

I would just call it a perspective grid. This is also by the way why a image is worth more than a thousand words as there really is no name for half of what you see. Only a rather leg thy and misinterpretation prone description.

 query : Re: Replicate curves adjustment in Photoshop I edited an image with a curves adjustment on all the channels (RGB, red, green and blue). Now I want to know how those curves looked like, so I can

@Kimberly620

Yes you can do this. However it really depends on many factors. First of you can just simply use some scientific plotting tool to plot each value in 2D where x is original value and y is new pictures value.

I am using mathematica for this, quick and dirty mathematica code looks as follows (but you could choose any other tool):

src = ColorSeparate[Import["c:\temp\test.png"]];
srcAdj = ColorSeparate[Import["c:\temp\testadj.png"]];
r = Flatten[ImageData [src[[1]]]];
r2 = Flatten[ImageData [srcAdj[[1]]]];
rtp = Transpose[{r, r2}];
g = Flatten[ImageData [src[[2]]]];
g2 = Flatten[ImageData [srcAdj[[2]]]];
gtp = Transpose[{g, g2}];
b = Flatten[ImageData [src[[3]]]];
b2 = Flatten[ImageData [srcAdj[[3]]]];
btp = Transpose[{b, b2}];
Show[ListPlot[rtp, AspectRatio -> 1, PlotStyle -> Red],
ListPlot[gtp, AspectRatio -> 1, PlotStyle -> Green],
ListPlot[btp, AspectRatio -> 1, PlotStyle -> Blue]]

So for test ive used following curves as the adjusted image (image used):

And mathematica gives me:

Which is pretty close, or possibly exactly the same value. Making a curves adjustment file out of this wouldn't be too hard*. However a word of warning! If your images are lossy, like jpeg compressed, then this will not work. Example with jpegs:

Now the plot points are all over the place and youd have to try to filter the data somehow. So the take here is that if the image has something other than just a curves adjustment then the thing just blows up.

* If the data was read in with the code above then the curves export is:

file = FileNameJoin[{ "C:\temp", "out.amp"}];
BinaryWrite[
file, (SortBy[DeleteDuplicates[rtp], First] // Transpose //
Last) *255 // IntegerPart];
BinaryWrite[
file, (SortBy[DeleteDuplicates[gtp], First] // Transpose //
Last) *255 // IntegerPart];
BinaryWrite[
file, (SortBy[DeleteDuplicates[btp], First] // Transpose //
Last) *255 // IntegerPart];
Close[file];

the amp file can then be read to a photoshop curves layer for example. And it produces same image in my test case. The code is not really performace oriented but it works.

The IMP/ART/MAG looks very industrial, while the Introducing, THE, /2018 form an informal contrast. That's fine.

I could read the Introducing without problems, while English isn't my mother tongue. But both, Introducing and THE are struggling for the introducing role on the language level. For my taste, one is too much. I would sacrifice the THE. From the balance, some other graphical element at that place might be ok and needed, to get a good balance and prevent a too static look.

I agree on the inconsistency of uppercase in THE, and the slash before the year. The logo in the lower left looks ok for me.

 query : Re: How heavy should ink coverage be for a custom CMYK rich black? In recent jobs, I have skewed away from pre-mixed rich black formulas in favour of making a black that fits dominant colours

@Kimberly620

There is no answer to your question as such: everything above C0M0Y0K100 is darker than process black. However, consider that 100% ink means that your printer fills the entire raster, while 25 fills only a quarter of a raster.

This means that the lower the value of your other colors the more uneven it is, so it might be perceived as grainy. So while M100 K100 is extremely even, C25 M0 Y50 K100 might appear more uneven. How grainy people perceive it is hard to say, since it depends on the medium, print resultion, raster type and distance to viewer. Most likely this is not really an issue.

However if you go for dark BLACK with a hint of undertone, then I would fully saturate the primary color and add black. Then bring it down to a 200-300% coverage range.

But then I have the option to make test prints (and sadly, the duty to clean the machine if I just get the color all over the place). So I would print a few swatches.

 query : Re: How to avoid uneven lines and moirée in printed hatches? When printing thin diagonal hatches on inkjet or laser printers, the lines often become uneven in terms of line width. The effect varies

@Kimberly620

It is simply called aliasing. On a laser printer theres not much you can do about it. It simply happens because you are very close to the actual resolution of the printer.

Yes aliasing is highly dependent on exact implementation details of the printer and the size of the actual dots the printer uses. Printers can not really smooth lines though, they may have all kinds of tricks up the on the actual printing level. Inkjets are almost impossible to do anything about in this case.

If you want to do something about this then you can not use vectors you must actually make a bitmap on the native resolution of the printer. Most likely this means writing machine specific printer code. OR you use a printer with MUCH much more resolution.

Calirification

I am not saying one can not do this. I am just saying one can not do this easily through the general printing abstraction. What you want isn't well handled by the abstraction layer, because that's what we want the abstraction to handle. This is the price we pay for having the ability to plug any number of printers to nearly any machine. You can send instructions to the actual printer that does just this.

For example you can send a hairline instruction in postscript. But illustrator can not send hairlines out (Corel can in certain printer drivers). But even with this it does not guarantee that the space between hairlines is constant and does not in fact jump one dot here and one there.

Like i said you can send direct code the the printers too, now you need to write it in a text editor. So for example if you REALLY REALLy want to do this then you can. However it will only work with printers that have same programming interface. For example its possible to send a halftone handler in postscript, this one has the ability to do this. Only it dont work if there is a suitable RIP in between*.

* like at my work. But then, thats also good, I or some student can no longer upload a joke function that mirrors every 10:th uneven page. Which admittedly was hilarious when bound to a check to see who the person printing was. Admittedly IT didn't think it was so funny.

@Kimberly620

In InDesign for chapters to work as you think it should (and frankly I think the same way) each chapter should be a different document in a book file.

What you can do in single document is: when slicing it for chapters, name "Selection marker" with a proper number. Then use type > insert special Character > markers > section markers.
And yes, this will require manual change of selection markers.

Also, you can set in "Number & section options" number of section by hand (so 1, 2, 3 and so on) and then type > text variable > insert > chapter number. Con of this is that section is tied differently when deleting and adding pages. So when page is deleted section stay the same (say you start on page 19, delete this page and section stay on page 19) but when adding pages the section moves (so when adding two pages before page 19 section move to page 21).

And also you can play with running header.

I am currently in the process of creating a logo for myself, within Photoshop. I know many may say that using Illustrator or Vector may be better but I am using the logo as an opportunity to learn more about Photoshop.

I understand that there are no 'standard dimensions' for logos, since the logo dimensions will be influenced by its purpose.

The logo will primarily be required for:

Website & Favicon
Social Media Channels: Profile and Hero/Headers
Stationery

With the above in mind, I am under the impression that I would need to create a logo to factor in each of the above dimensions. Over time, I will end up having a lot of files for various purposes.

Is this the 'best practice' or is there a way to create 1 or 2 (primary and secondary for example) logos which scale up and down as is necessary for each of the above?

I have heard about the use of proportions over dimensions. Would this be a better approach? If so, how would I go about the use of proportions? For example, say I open a new File in Photoshop, what dimensions would I insert, when thinking about the proportions approach?

If proportions was the better approach, how would I establish the correct proportions, as to ensure they fit the various purposes, outlined above?

Note: I understand how to work out proportions. For example: 600px by 300px would be 1:2 and 900px by 300px would be 1:3 etc. Where I am uncertain, is the application of proportions and any best practices which should be considered, when working with dimensions and/or proportions.

AI files are not EPS files, as of version 9 forward. Older AI files are EPS files of sort, so a version 7 or a version 3 file is an EPS. Newer AI files may sometimes be PDF files though, depending on the settings used.

The vector file and PDF look fine on a desktop, but the person who received this file says that the rays were distorted when they opened it — which (I think) is due to the fact that the PDF was opened up by that person on their phone through a Google Drive (app) preview.

The PNG looks fine on all devices, regardless of whether it's previewed the Google Drive mobile app or on a desktop, but the PDF is what that person is having problems with, and I'm not sure why.

Could it just be that the Google Drive mobile app can't correctly preview the rays, and they need to download the PDF to a PC to see the correct/undistorted graphic? Or should I be saving the file differently to get it to preview correctly on G Drive's mobile app preview?
