As a alternative to the other answers, you can copy the elements from Illustrator into Photoshop as smart object or path and you can scale it at any size with any DPI.

For some reason the colours I select in InDesign does apply to the art board. But imported images display the colours correctly as well as the colour selector.

Please see my image attached - I opened Colour picker, selected the eyedropper and selected a blue from "see video on the web" - that same blue shows on colour picker. Once I click OK to apply to another square that blue goes almost purple.

@Megan533

@New_spirit_designs - you really need to look at the specific PSP's (Print Service Provider) published submission guidelines: here are some sublimation printing art submission guidelines from a super-quick web search which are generically similar to your question:

A-E-Mag-art-Sublimation

JakPrints Art Sublimation

Five Ultimate Sublimation Submissions

As you can see, some ask for specific approaches to colour, some just want spots, some require CMYK only, some have pre-existing file templates they require that you download and use as the base for your design effort: it's crucial you query the specific PSP as to their requirements to be sure your print comes out as expected.

IMHO pdf is a good overall general file exchange format, and can be printed from with reasonable success in a lot of PSP shops, but there are also many who will not take a pdf - either they've had poor results with pdf in the past, or they may have different proprietary RIP or imposition software which only takes EPS or AI, so you absolutely need to check with them!

@Megan533

The utility Grapher on Mac OS can handle analyzing and displaying most of this sort of stuff out-of-the-box, but as the easiest output is then raster instead of vector, I agree with the earlier post by @2287001 that Scilab is a high powered tool which would get you a lot of what you need.

Also worth mentioning GeoGebra 3D, an online 3D grapher, which will output vector formats including svg and pdf.

Also, @sambler is correct that Blender supports math functions as nodal inputs to create meshes, so you should be able to accomplish a lot of these figures in Blender with a little research and thought - though I freely admit I'd be hard-pressed to do so quickly or fluently.

I'd use the procedural geometry nodes in modo to approach this if I were trying this whole cloth for myself, and wanted maximum flexibility, but that's also because it's one of my primary tools and I know it intimately.

EDIT

I downloaded and tested Scilab for Mac based on @2287001 's recommendation, and I find it dense, immensely powerful, and indeed output can be done in svg - I just tested pulling a multisurface 3D plot output with false colour indicating amplitude into Affinity Designer - came in as sheer vector, all editable. I think we have a winner here!*

Here are outputs from Affinity Designer - original and then two quick alterations - one adding slight transparency to the fills (which also shows you that the output to SVG saves overlapping data correctly versus doing an overprint knockout) and one quicky B&W adjustment layer.

As is from SciLab:

when you scale done 272 to 36 I guess you wont be able to avoid blurry edges without altering your icon, since it simply will have have half pixels as (at least if my maths hasnt failed me completely) you cannot devide 272 by 36 without a remainder.

It is best to design at the smallest size you need to and then scale upwards. Maybe this video here is helpful: vimeo.com/169809377

@Megan533

This depends entirely on whether the previous designer was employed to do "work for hire" or if there's other contract language granting client full IP rights to work, including derivative works which is what your "completing" their previous work would legally be.

If there's no explicit wording granting IP rights to client, they don't own any of it at all, and you're better off not using that starting point.

If the client or your working relationship with the previous designer is not in tatters, contact them and find out what the IP status is for that work - if they are on reasonable terms with client, they may be willing to issue a rights-granting for "completion". If however the client has failed to pay for work tendered, the previous designer would be fully within their legal rights to refuse to grant IP rights - and if that is the case, you should be very careful in contract dealings with said client.

I'm not a lawyer at all, and this shouldn't be taken as competent legal advice per se, but I am a multi-decade graphic designer & illustrator, so I am somewhat familiar with the topic at hand.

Nothing in this answer shall be considered legal advice and no attorney-client relationship has been established.

@Megan533

Posted in: #ColorProfile #Krita

I am a new Krita user and confused about the Color Management Settings.

I understand Krita cannot provide the more usual color profiles since they may be copyrighted. On the other hand, I have these profiles already and would like to make Krita do what I am used to in other programs. To keep it simple I tend to use sRGB IEC61966-2.1 for images and 2 monitor profiles made using DisplayCal and an xRite ColorMunki, one for each Display. I have a regular screen as Display 1 and a Cintiq as Display 2. Krita will usually be used on Display 2.

Monitor Profile

In Settings|Configure Krita|Color Management, Display tab:

"Use system monitor profile" is unchecked.
It lists "sRGB-elle-V2-srgbtrc.icc" for both Display 1 and Display 2.

If I check "Use system monitor profile", will it use the ICC profiles I created for Display 1 and 2, respectively (depending on which display Krita is running on) and ignore the ones with elle in the name. Seems like this would be the easiest way to get my calibrated monitor profiles.

If "Use system monitor profile" is unchecked, should I be specifying the appropriate calibrated monitor ICC profiles. (I can add these using "Add new color profile).

Image Profile

Under the General tab, there is a way to specify the color model, presumably for images. There does not seem to be a way to specify the ICC profile (which I would like to be sRGB IEC61966-2.1 for the RGB/Alpha color model). I have added this profile, and notice I can set it in the New file diaplog. It seems to remember it for the next time.

Before adding sRGB IEC61966-2.1, I used the default sRGB-elle-V2-srgbtrc.icc. I saved an image as PNG, checked to embed the profile. When opened in Photoshop, it said the profile was "sRGB built-in (8bpc)". I would have expected "sRGB-elle-V2-srgbtrc.icc", which is the display name for this profile. I don't understand this.

Thanks for the help.

In CS5 version have to use File-->Scripts-->Export Layers to files. There you set your output as PDF and its quality. After execution of the script you have to merge your PDF pages into one document with help of external software (ex. jPDF Tweak )

I am currently working on a larger document that has a number in the top left of every page to give you an idea what part of the document you are currently in. Not as in the page number, but rather regarding the content structure.

This screenshot may give you a better example:

The number shall only increase on pages with a new heading, however. Not every page. This for example is page 2 of the document, which however still belongs to my first heading (would you call these chapters? Sections? Idk ... I am lost for a better term here):

Now the problem I have is, that I don't know how to update it accordingly:

As I may have hinted above already, I thought one might be able to do that using chapter / section numbering? But I am having a hard time figuring out whether this is even the right way of going about that or if there is another / better method. Especially one that is easy to update if I were to add more content later-on.

@Megan533

tl;dr: Don't try to micro-manage colour in webdesign.

Every screen is different, every time you use that screen the lighting is different and even the same screen at the same moment may be seen differently by distinct users. Trying to colour manage in such a way that colours are exactly reproduced every time online is a waste of time and effort.

Yes, you can come pretty close by taking colour profiles into account, and you might even get to an exact reproduction of your Photoshop colour in your browser on your screen. Then, you show your prototype to your client, who will look at it either on a mobile device or a monitor that is, in 99.98% of cases, calibrated differently than your screen—if it is calibrated at all.

Add to that the fact that humans' lens slightly changes colour as they age, making them perceive colours to be more yellow the older they are. Add to that the fact that colour perception is changed depending on the intensity and colour of light that falls on the screen it is viewed with. Add to that the fact some screens may be dimmed or brightened because their user prefers it that way. All these factors thwart your efforts to colour manage.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that you shouldn't colour manage and just choose something that's 'close enough'. Try and reproduce your colours accurately, but keep in mind that the Big Wide World™ will do its utmost to shake things up.

Considering that the deviations you are observing are in the order of magnitude of a single RGB unit on a 0 to 255 scale, they are, for all practical means and purposes, negligible. If colours would stray by 10 units or more, I'd start to be concerned. But, even if they are put up directly next to each other on a screen, the vast majority of viewers will not be able to discern between two colours that differ only one unit.

Save yourself the time and effort and just leave it.

 query : Re: Upload photoshop-created PNG to Discord without changing colours Here's an icon made with photoshop: Looks fine when I open it in Preview or Safari. When I upload it to discord, the colours

@Megan533

I came up with a method that avoids photoshop because it seems every time I touch that everything breaks. My method is to take the graphic created with photoshop, and use it to punch a hole through a sample of the color that I want.

I opened that png, the one that was meant to be my icon, in Preview.app (not photoshop because photoshop was messing everything up) and then maximise contrast, made saturation as low as possible, and mess around with other settings, like maximising/minimising exposure, to make it completely black on a transparent background.

Then I cmd-A copied it all, drew a white rectangle, and pasted it down again. So now my original image is a completely black-on-white icon.

The color settings in Preview let you invert colours by moving the leftmost levels arrow to the right, and the rightmost to the left.

Now it should be white-on-black. Save that. This will be a mask.

Then I screenshotted the color I actually wanted. I used Preview's resize to resize that color to a 1000x1000px square (the size of my final image). Just a solid color. Screenshotting a solid block of color from the original png that you want to preserve the color of (first image of question) would have worked too.

Then I ran this command with imagemagick:

convert color.png mask.png -alpha off -compose copy_opacity -composite warningicon.png

It spat out exactly what I wanted, which was a png of the correct color that doesn't weirdly change colours when uploaded to discord.

@Megan533

First thing to say: I'm the programmer/designer of the app I present bellow.
Second thing to say: if you try it, you'll agree it's the best & easiest solution! :)
A few days ago, we released Find my Font mobile - a free app for both iOS & Android - which identifies any free or commercial font from an image.
So, if you want to identify the fonts of an iOS app:

a) You take a screen capture of the app
b) You run the Find my Font app and load the screen capture
c) You select 1-7 distinct letters
d) You can optionally choose a font category (you can target your search to "All Fonts", "Freemium", "Commercial" or "Google Fonts")
e) You tap on search button and get the 30 closest font matches

Take a look at the screenshots bellow, for an example of finding the closest matches of a book cover using Adobe Garamond.

Happy font hunting! :)
I'll be glad to respond to any questions or suggestions on how to make the app even better.

PS: The WhatTheFont app mentioned above is an excellent one but it only matches fonts that MyFonts.com is selling. Find my Font matches any commercial or free font (like fonts of dafont.com and Google Web Fonts).
