The short answer:

You should keep the files as long as is specified in the contract.

I've worked with clients who wanted everything and have me delete all raw material and I've worked with clients where we kept a backup for a period of time.
But always: as specified in the contract, that way you can't go wrong.

I just joined these boards in hope to find some guidance. I am not particularly a graphic designer, but I am working on designing my own logo. I have limited knowledge of Illustrator. I am diving into becoming a serious Prop Maker and I want to make a logo to represent my work.

This is where I am at right now after a good amount of tweaking. Basically I want the silver/white/dark turquoise color scheme, and the image I was sort of going for was a vague representation of a workbench, particularly mine I just built from scratch recently.

I hope to get some feed back as to what could be changed, what I did right, and simply to know my logo is good enough before I officially release it to all my social media sites.

I have the following problem:

Hi have a numbered list in which one of the paragraphs has a manual linebreak. Now normally this would not be a problem, however since I have set my text to justified, InDesign spaces that line out to ridiculous extents ...

InDesign does not show this behaviour with a "normal" carriage return. However by doing this my paragraph is of course split into two entries of my numbered list, which is not what I want:

Is there a way to format the text so that it does not get spaced out that much? Maybe a special setting for "justify text" which I haven't found yet that keeps InDesign from justifiying text if it reaches a certain threshold.

@Merenda852

Deceptively simple. The orange color of the text is 100% red, 78% green, and 0% blue, and the rest of the image is black or white. So making a monochrome image from the red channel alone is enough. For this use Color>Components>Channel mixer, set to "Monochrome", and use Red=100%, Green=Blue=0%.

@Merenda852

Another few solutions:

Subtraction of selection

Create circle selection which is the out edge of the line
Still with the Ellipse select tool, Ctrl-click (or click the "Subtract" mode tin the tool option) and make a selection for the inner edge. The inner selection subtracted from the outer one leaves a ring selection.
Bucket-fill the ring

To make things easier:

add two guides (H & V) that cross at the center of the circle
for both selections click on the center and start dragging from there (or use the Expand from center and Fixed aspect ratio options).

This methods work only on circles (or squares).

More general solution

For a random selection shape, the quickest solution is Edit>Stroke selection and pick the "Line" mode. However, the result doesn't always look clean, so most people instead you can use Bill Kerr's solution:

Select>To path,
Select>None,
Edit>Stroke path.

If you omit Select>None, the selection chops off the outer part of the stroke, so the outer edge of the line is along the selection (and you have to specify a line width which is twice what you want). With Select>None the line straddles the edge of the selection.

Using Filters>Render>Gfig

This is the built-in, solution, but the result isn't very clean

Using a path directly

There are scripts to generate paths for various geometric shapes that you cannot easily obtain from a selection (polygons...). Once you have the path you stroke it.

 query : Re: Why would I want to a use baseline grid in Illustrator cc? What are the benefits be of using a baseline grid in Illustrator for a limited amount of text?

@Merenda852

tl;dr: the baseline grid is useful to align other, non-text objects to your text baselines to give your layout a very tight vertical rhythm.

A baseline grid is not just a tool for setting text in such a way that line-spacings are proportional and match in a single document. It also is a powerful tool in placing and aligning non-text objects in the layout.

One of the much-overlooked aspects of layout is that it's not just important to ask yourself where you place an object, but also why there. A very good 'why' is 'it aligns with something that was already there'.

Any layout, even one without any text, even an empty one, already has places to align to that are 'already there'. The paper edge, the margin, the mathematical centers; the golden ratio or the Rule of Thirds if you want to go fancy an draw some guides.

I always say that I'm looking for 'excuses' to put something where I put it. All those examples I just named are perfect excuses to align to. I am always looking for more lines, more excuses to which I can align objects. The baseline grid gives me tens of new horizontal excuses.

If you use the baseline grid to align non-text objects to your text baselines, you will reinforce the vertical rhythm that has been dictated by the grid. A lay-out just looks that much better when the edges of images align to text baselines. If you establish a vertical rhythm with a baseline grid in your text, and then break that by misaligning the edges of non-text objects, that's bad design. You have a multitude of aligning excuses in your grid. Use them.

 query : Re: Restore correct colour balance after "Colour to Alpha..." using GIMP I am running into this problem where removing a green screen using GIMP messes up the colour balance of the elements in the

@Merenda852

Your initial image isn't correct. You removed the background, but you also removed white which isn't part of the background (for instance, the pips...). The same thing happens between images two and three, you remove green which isn't part of the background. You really have to cutout the dice, but the focus blur on the background dice makes it hard to do it properly.

The "contract" of Color-to-alpha is that when you have removed a color, putting the remaining image over a background filled with the removed color recreates the initial image. However there are many cases where there are several solutions, for instance, when removing white, a gray 50% (#808080) could become:

#808080 at 100% opacity #000000 at 50% opacity #404040 at 66.66% opacity
etc...

because all these combinations, over a white layer, would recreate the initial #808080.

But C2A always takes the (color,opacity) couple aims for the maximum transparency (#000000 at 50% here) which isn't always what you want, so you have to protects part that should remain opaque with a proper selection.

In applications like Sketch for example, you can select them all and change the height parameter to your desired value to change them all at once. Is this also somehow possible in InDesign?

Usual technique in Gimp:

Open the file.
Layer → Transparency → Add alpha channel (if disabled then it’s already there).
Using the wand with a low threshold (<10), select the background (shift-click on any closed areas that aren't selected, such as the inside of the upper curve of the final S).
Select → Grow by one pixel (the selection should include the border pixels of the letters).
Color → Color to alpha and remove the white.

@Merenda852

tl;dr: To solve your problem, all you need to do is leave Isolation Mode, and then re-try to select both objects and apply the Clipping Mask.

As H.W. Sanden says, you need to select both objects. Likely, this is impossible in the situation you show in your screenshot, because you have entered the Isolation Mode for your clipping shape. Let me explain.

Isolation Mode is a mode in which you, you guessed it, isolate an object (or group of them) to work on that (group of) object(s) and them only. The rest of your object will be 'washed out', and locked. You can't interact with them in any useful way.

This is great if you actually want to just work on that object. It really sucks when you want to interact with other objects again, because entering and exiting Isolation Mode is very non-intuitive.

To enter Isolation Mode, use the Move tool (black arrow) and double-click on any object or group.

To exit Isolation Mode again, either click the arrow pointing left on top left of the document, right under the tabs with opened document names or double click with the Move tool on any spot where there are no selectable objects.

@Merenda852

Finding the exact colour code might depend on your current colour space, as mentioned in the comments. This method is colour-space agnostic and whould work in most software that supports layers.

Draw a pixel of colour A on a new layer;
Add a second layer on top of that, and draw a pixel of colour B exactly on top of pixel A;
Reduce layer B's opacity to 50%;
Merge the two layers;
Sample the resulting pixel's colour. That is the colour you are looking for.

Alternatively, you could also draw directly over pixel A in layer A with a 50% opaque brush in colour B to get the same effect. Faster, but less intuitive.

I got the idea for the logo from Shutterstock. If I would ever get sued in the future, will I be the one who’ll have to pay? The customer doesn’t have any way of my contacting me, except for mailing me. What would be the smartest thing to do?

The customer already said (before even choosing my logo) that if there ever has to be paid money for copyright, the designer will have to pay. But he simply typed this in a message; so of course it doesn’t mean much. Can I do anything to prevent trouble?

@Merenda852

I have dealt with this in many different ways. One that is easy and works in many situations is to take a screen shot of the part of the PDF that you need, at a high zoom level. Then, edit the resulting raster image. Because you zoom in to the PDF first, you create a large image that can be scaled, and will still have sufficient resolution for it to be zoomed itself. The only limitation is the size of your monitor, because most ways of capturing screen shots only let you capture one monitor's worth. However, again, if you are good with image editing, you can zoom into your PDF, capture it as more than one image (scroll to the parts you need), and then stitch the multiple images together. For anything but a photograph, this isn't that hard. Also, some screen capture programs actually do capture more than one screenfull -- see "ShareX" which is free and allows scrolling captures.

@Merenda852

You don't.

Logos shouldn't be reconstructed. Your file should be completely sufficient to display the logo anywhere. That means that, in a vector format logo file as you send it to your customer, text is converted to shapes / outlines. You can do this in Illustrator with Type > Create Outlines or Cmd/Ctrl+Shift+O.

Including text in a delivery file as a text object creates all kinds of headaches: any user opening the file lacking the exact same font file will have the font replaced, and they may not even be aware that has happened.

In the case that you would want to write a style guide that includes the negative tracking of a piece of text, '-25' is sufficient: tracking is expressed in a unit* which is relative to the font size. BE sure to specify the typeface and font to be used, as a certain negative tracking may look good with one typeface or font but not with another.

* The unit I was taught this is expressed in is thousands of an em, but that may very well be known under the names you listed.
