Recently I've discovered a method for transferring a toner from a piece of transparent paper meant for ordinary laserjet printers to a PCB which makes it a perfect photo resist. All you need is to apply a 70/30 acetone and ethyl alchohol mixture on the paper after printing on it and putting the PCB to be etched on it and letting all dry.
Now you are probably thinking this is a electronics engineering or chemistry question, but it is rather a question for people who understand the actual capabilities of laserjet printers beyond the advertised specifications.
What is the lowest practical resolution for a single line one can expect from an ordinary 1200 DPI laserjet printer, no marketing?
The thinnest lines I managed to print on the paper were roughly 0.05mm (50 micron) when measured through a microscope. Ideal solution would be 30 microns. Is that achieveable with standard home/office laserjet printers?
The Samsung printer I have (SCX-3400) doesn't provide any info in the print settings about the DPI settings and does some filtering on the image before printing so I am unable to test the actual raw capabilities.

My thoughts are there would be a way to create some sort of non-printable annotation on each artboard that expresses the desired quantity?

I have an InDesign document which is filled from the data in a CSV file using data merge. The CSV has columns for First Name, Middle Name & Last Name, but some of the data in the CSV isn't filled in - such as Middle Name if the person doesn't have one. InDesign then leaves a physical space when the middle name is missing which is putting a double space between the first and last name when I merge the data. Is there any way to get InDesign to ignore blank cells in the CSV file?

Essentially, I'm trying to automate the deletion of any line of copy that has a zero value. (I have close on a hundred of these docs to edit) Any ideas?

If you’ve gone to the trouble of creating a separate layer and included the dieline (also cutter trace or cutter guide), then leaving it in really isn’t an issue (on the contrary).
There can sometimes be some confusion if it’s all in a single layer and made up from CMYK rather than being isolated via a separate spot – this does require the designer/repro to remove the trace by selecting and deleting what can often be a series of unjoined lines. Hence the possibility that elements can be left in inadvertently.
As package producers, we have a series of internal checks for this and various possible issues – and we rarely pass artwork back if we can help – it’s our job after all. But sometimes it’s easier to revert to the original artwork and request that the trace is removed before re-submitting just to be sure.
Even if we’ve supplied the trace, we still remove it and re-apply the approved manufacturing version to ensure nothing has happened to the artwork in terms of scaling, etc., and that we’re working to the correct version of the approved sample. And if it’s a structural design which has been submitted by a customer, we still totally re-draw the file to ensure it’s correctly specified for the die maker and works for our machines.
So ultimately it helps to have it removed, but we try to do our best however the artwork arrives.

Use paragraph rules instead. Those can be restrained to text.

If I try to rotate something in any layer it doesn't work. I can see the actual tool rotating, but whatever's been selected doesn't move.
If I copy and paste into a new file, I just get a white rectangle instead of whatever was copied. However, all this works fine if I open some other file.
I've never seen it do that before.

I have always found Lynda.com one of the best resources for learning - starts at about 0 pa in my country - you can browse most of the resources selected chapters - to see if its for you before you buy, some of the videos are on YouTube.
Both my wife and daughter have free ed-accounts because they are in FT education and I can login as them if needed - for the quality of material the spend is pretty reasonable.

Lets say you are working on a logo, you've got a few different types. Ideally you have just the symbolic logo that is meant to be shown on a light background, that same logo re-colored for a dark background, and then both of those variants with the name of the company on it.
You get the idea. Now the problem is that if I want to change the logo, I have to redesign every file. This cannot possibly be the production workflow, and if it is I want to fix that.
Coming from the software engineering world, it seems like there ought to be a way to make a change to a single component (text, logo, etc), and have the change applied to all dependent files. Any way to do this already?

I like Droid Sans myself. There are several varieties, two of which are Mono and Fallback (proportional).
The specific one I use is the one WITHOUT the ugly dot (or slash) in the center of the zero.

In the Layers panel, target the items you want to round.
If you want to round a specific attribute of an object, such as its fill or stroke, target the object in the Layers panel and then select the attribute in the Appearance panel.
Choose Effect > Stylize > Round Corners. (The command is located in the first Stylize sub-menu.)
To define the curvature of the rounded curve, enter a value in the Radius text box, and click OK.

No one will set you up a die line for 25 stickers, it wouldn't be cost effective.
Get some full sheet sticker stock paper, rated to go through the printer you are using. set them up multi on a page and create the cut line in a layer so that is barely visible and cut them yourself with an art knife with a metal ruler.

You don't insert frame breaks into the XML contents. You do that in Paragraph Styles→Keep Options, where you set the start of the paragraph in the next frame.
But it requires that your XML content be explicitly mapped to paragraph styles, either via Tags→Map Tags to Styles, which automatically applies styles to corresponding tags when content is placed onto the page, or by declaring aid:pstyle attributes on your XML nodes.
Lastly, that won't work straight away with pictures unless you specifically embed the img nodes inside a text node with a corresponding paragraph style.

I'm trying to wrap my head around the UI design in Blade Runner 2049. A couple articles just came out talking about Territory Studio's work on the film and their stuff is incredible. I know all the text/lines/etc. are made in Illustrator, but what they do in terms of effects over the top of it looks fantastic. Lots of layered textures that are really hazy, worn-out with screen burn, color fade, whatever else. It looks like there's a subtle inner glow on a lot of but I can't figure out how they made the rest of it look so beat up yet futuristic. You can't just slap some generic grungy textures on the UI because that's not going to look right on what's supposed to be computer screen.
Any guesses as to a few things going on in these images? I'd like to try making some of my own.

I'm trying to format the document in the right way (by the rules) using paragraphs styles, etc. but I'm having trouble with paragraphs. Maybe I'm using paragraphs the wrong way but I don't know another way for breaking sentences into different lines.
So, I have #1 sentence with left justified text. I need the #2 sentence to go down the 1st one, so I used a paragraph but then I get a huge space between the sentences (i want them to have the same leading).
Then I tried another way. From #2 to #3, I "Forced Line Break", which gives me the look I want (same leading) but for some reason I'm not aware, the text justification turns "Justified all lines" which makes gaps between words and forces the last line to have the same width as the text column.
I will show in the second image how I want the text to look like.
Please, I really need to work this out! I have a 200 book page to format and I really want to do it the right way!

I am searching for a solution for a client who needs .pdf's from an Indesign file. The use-case is that there are daily changes in a Price-List that we have created in InDesign. The Data-set itself exists in an Excel-file. It takes a lot of repetitive tasks to keep it actualized, so i was thinking if there might be solution to automate the process.
My vision is that my client uploads an Excel with the correct Name into a Folder on a Server, which in turn triggers my Indesign to actualize the data in the .indd and automatically export the new Version as .pdf back to the Server, where it is available for download, or whatever they wanna do with it afterwards.
I realize that I probably have to do shell scripting for that, but do I have to use the Indesign-Sdk as well? Where do i start on such an endeavour ?

They have a number of paper sizes, 17x22, 18x27 etc. I do not understand the "no scaling" option. A jpg does not have a physical size, does it? I mean, if I created a photoshop document at 24"x24" and save it as a jpg, that jpg is not 24"x24" is it?
And the "use smaller image" confuses me too. In order for that to make sense, I would need to know the pixel dimensions of the print job, right?

I've used Photoshop for about 10 years and don't have access to it now, so I'm trying to get used to Gimp. There are some very common things one would want to do in a graphics editing program, that at this point have very universal and thus intuitive ways of being done, not just specific to Photoshop, that when I try to do in Gimp I feel like I'm being tortured. I was hoping an experienced user who has made the transition might be able to give me some general pointers. I've included below a list of specific issues, but any general ideas like "what on Photoshop is this, is interpreted this way on Gimp," would be very appreciated.
I import a new layer into Gimp. The new layer is smaller than the document. I want to move stuff around, incorporating it into my entire image, but Gimp crops out the image the moment it leaves the frame of the layer it was in. Every time I encounter this, I have to look up again how to change the size of the layer. It seems so counterintuitive and useless for this to be necessary! There must be an easier way.
I want to copy and paste a selection. On every other application I've ever heard of, you can do this with command-C and command-V. Not here. I still have yet to find a straightforward way to just copy and paste. I feel like I have to trick the program into doing something that any user would clearly want to do.
I want to delete a part of a layer, revealing the stuff that's behind it. Before I can do this, I need to control-click the layer, go to layer properties and tell it to add an alpha channel. Of course I want it to have an alpha channel! It's a layer!
I select a layer in the layer window, one that is mostly transparent and has smaller images in it, for example text on a transparent background. I then go to click on it to do something, but if I click on a part that's transparent, it automatically switches me to a layer behind it. Is there any way to tell the program I want to work in the layer I selected, and stay there until I select a different one? Meanwhile it has no problem letting me, say, erase an accidentally selected hidden layer, with no warning.
Every time I switch out of the application and then switch back in, my tools and layers windows are gone, and I have to re-open them. I don't think you can really do anything in the program without at least one of these windows open. Do I need to go into the preferences and set something saying that I have the program open because I intend on continuing to use it or what?
Photoshop has something called "free transform," where you can resize, move, stretch, skew and rotate with various mouse movements, without having to finalize your decision until you're done. In Gimp, it seems you can resize and move via shift-t but otherwise you have to do and finalize each thing separately. Sometimes I don't know how I want it resized, for instance, without seeing how it looks under another change. Is that not possible here?
I want to export an image of my picture. Let's say I want a .jpg. I go into the window for doing that and select my image format from the list. Then I have to manually change the file extension in the file name to the one that matches my choice, or get an error message. !?!
I realize I'm being a little ranty and complainy -- try to understand this post is a result of many long frustrated sessions trying to adapt to the program. I'm just looking for some general guidance and would rather not hang on to my current attitude about Gimp. So maybe you can get an idea of my perspective from the stuff I listed above and help me out ey?
