 query : How to blend multiple pre-made swatch gradients into 1 shape in Illustrator? I'm trying to make these separate rectangles into 1 rectangle with each gradient flowing seamlessly into one another.

@Pierce403

Posted in: #AdobeIllustrator #Gradient #Shapes #Swatches

I'm trying to make these separate rectangles into 1 rectangle with each gradient flowing seamlessly into one another.
Right now, the edges are too harsh for me and I want more smoothness.
All of these gradients are from the Metal swatches in the Gradient Library.

I tried using the Blend tool, but I was unsuccessful no matter which option I chose.

I made a gradient by hand to show you what I'm trying to do.
Here are some examples.

My predicament is my hand made gradient takes a while. I write each swatch's RGB number down then one by one I add it to my new shape.

Is there any way of making this process easier? Am I missing something? I'm new to using these programs and this is the second time I'm coming across this problem. Doing it by hand gives the best results but I feel like I'm making the process more complicated than it needs to be.

Thanks in advance Adobe Veterans!

@Pierce403

You can't remove those pixels, the image will always have an original rectangular size. The problem then lies with how the application you use renders the image. Have you tried other formats? Usually PNG carries transparency but maybe it you can provide the name of the CAD program you use we may be able to help.

@Pierce403

My question to you: Why is your color palette better (or good)?

I'm not meaning to imply that it's not. Your design may be objectively better for a number of reasons:

better match existing branding
desirable usability features (to help users distinguish important vs secondary information)
better contrast between colors (vs conflict; this is a concept many non-designers don't appreciate until it is explained to them)

If your colors are better, you should have these explanations prepared in advance before a meeting.

Some other advice that may make the discussion/resolution process easier:

Provide more than one choice: Unless I have clear specifications, I always prepare 3 different color/design schemes. That drives discussion to comparing my designs rather than people telling me how to change a single design (often with confusing or unclear ideas).
Ask for information beforehand: If you ask an open question like "what are some websites you like?" and "what kinds of colors do you like", you can sometimes preempt this type of bike shedding.
Ask why: Sometimes people push a color or idea for an underlying reason that might not be obvious. You may find that you can address their concern a better way than what they are suggesting, so you both get what you want.

@Pierce403

Posted in: #AdobeIllustrator #AdobeIndesign #Packaging #Workflow

I was debating with my students this week about which software to submit their files in for my package design class. A few advantages of InDesign I see are as follow:

The capability of creating mixed swatches with Pantones.
The ability to customize the links panels so I can see right away which files and in what color mode and resolution, etc.
Better type management, and in many languages.
Getting a warning if I have overset text.
Possibility of lowering the display performance if the file is heavy

After checking opinions on a few forums, it seems Illustrator is the preferred choice for package design. I've also freelanced in an agency specialized in package design and all their stuff was in Illustrator but after discussing, this seems to have been due to habit and the investment it would have required to switch everything to InDesign...

Am I missing something that makes the industry prefer Illustrator over InDesign? What would be the pros and cons of using Illustrator vs. InDesign for package design?

I've been asked to create a print brochure (like a traditional tri-fold) and a corresponding "ebrochure". I've never heard of an ebrochure, so in the absence of clear specifications from the client, I did a Google search for ebrochures. While this confirmed that an ebrochure is in fact a real thing, I also found a wide range of meanings and implementations.

While I will of course go back to the client for clearer specifications, I would like to have a better general understanding of the expectations of an ebrochure (if indeed there are common expectations).

What is an eBrochure? What is the typical content that would be included in such a product?
How is an eBrochure different from just a plain old website, which presumably includes the content that would appear in a brochure?

In general, printed projects should use CMYK colors, and anything else should use RGB. Printed ink cannot display a complete spectrum of visible colors like a computer monitor can. In other words, there are some colors that we just can’t put on paper.

I have just graduated with a first class degree in computer science, I have good programming skills due to being able to adapt and learn required things very easily and quickly. but what I have realised is that programming makes me un-happy. I just don't enjoy it anymore.

I enjoy playing around with photoshop and love colourful beautiful things. I have the determination to work very hardest to learn graphic design from online courses on Udemy, Pluralsight and Lynda.com and build a nice portfolio.

But what I'm worried about it that employers will not take me seriously. I'm worried they will see that I have not got a degree in Graphic design and put me in the no pile without looking at my portfolio.

 query : Re: Text variables of frame's properties in Adobe Indesign How do I create text variables of a frame's width and height then insert them as the text? Or is it possible to do that?

@Pierce403

You can try this rather basic script.
Returned values are based on object bounds, meaning that if you run it on a rotated object, returned values will be different than the ones in your Transform panel.
Also, it includes strokes. If you want to exclude them, just change line 5 visibleBounds to geometricBounds;

if (app.documents.length > 0) {
var myDocument = app.documents[0];
var mySelection = myDocument.selection[0];
var myPage = mySelection.parentPage;
var VB = mySelection.visibleBounds;
var mySelectionHeight = VB[2] - VB[0];
var mySelectionWidth = VB[3] - VB[1];
var myTextFrame = myPage.textFrames.add({
geometricBounds: [VB[0], VB[1], VB[2], VB[3]]
});

if (app.selection.length == 0) {
alert("Select something");
} else {
myTextFrame.contents = "Height = " + mySelectionHeight + " rWidth = " + mySelectionWidth;
myTextFrame.fit(FitOptions.FRAME_TO_CONTENT);
}

} else {
alert("Open a document");
}

You can use the gradient overly within the layer style (Double click the layer to open the window)

Do a Angle gradient with the required colors.
But make the colors close to each other to not get the gradient effect from one color to another

@Pierce403

Posted in: #AdobeIllustrator

I need to change only the saturation level of multiple objects in Illustrator to a uniform value.

Basically, I'm creating a design which uses only brightness derivations to contrast items from each other. I'm using the eye dropper tool to copy the color from one item to another, but as I move from item to item, the saturation slowly increments upward, probably due to rounding errors on Illustrator's end. For example, if I use the eyedropper tool to copy the color from one shape to the next, to the next, repeatedly, say, 50 times, the saturation level will be, say, 40 for the first shape yet because of repeatedly incrementing up slightly, the last shape's saturation level will be something like 50. I need to take all these shapes and change their saturation level back down to 40.

Is that possible in Illustrator? The recolor artwork tool does not seem to be able to handle cases like this.

If I'm understanding, you're saying that the colors on your screen while working in illustrator don't look true to what is exported as a .png file, right?
Check to see what your proof setup is like: on my mac, that's view > proof setup. If you're soft proofing in a different color profile (like Working CMYK, or Color Blindness) than the RGB you're trying to work in, it can create problems. You'll want to make sure you chose the color preset "Internet Standard RGB (sRGB)", which simulates Windows and Mac OS 10.6 and later.

My client has sent me an English version of their booklet's .indd file and wants me to change the text with its Farsi translation. Now, I know that InDesign has removed ME features in CC editions and the way to correctly render sentences is to use the Adobe World-Ready Paragraph Composer feature, but that just renders the all-in-Farsi sentences, and not exactly the paragraphs, surprisingly. So, for example, the mosIUR in the image I've attached should not be displayed there. Besides, the full stop of the last sentence in each paragraph gets placed in the beginning of the last line. How can I fix it?

I am an absolute beginner in Illustrator, currently working on a Mac in CC.
My first project is quite ambitious... I want to be able to trace (if that's the right method) childrens' drawings in order to have vector files that can be printed and used in promotional products.
My main issues are that when I expand the trace, it results in losing most of the original colours. There are some pretty colourful masterpieces, and I need to maintain the original colours to get the effect. The other issue is the huge file size that results. I did a few searches and have touched on embedded files vs linked files, but need some pointers that may help me to accomplish what I'm trying to achieve.

Many thanks :-)

Is there anyway to zoom in on only a portion of an image without enlarging the entire document?

I know that you can create a second window for the same document, put the windows side by side, and zoom in on the second window, however you can't see the cursor, and the changes don't update in real time.

What I have in mind would be kind of like a magnifying glass effect, and the purpose would be to make detailed adjustments or selections, while still viewing the whole document. If this is possible, maybe it requires a script or 3rd party application?

Thank you for your help!

My chosen title doesn't really get across what I'm trying to ask since my issue is a little hard to put into a few words.

Here's an image that describes it better.
I've made this design in Illustrator and I need to remove all the black in it, leaving behind transparency. I've tried it with Photoshop but the result is always a little sloppy. Vectors are just way more clean and sharp.

But to achieve this in Illu I'd have to expand all the strokes and shapes and then continuously subtract them from all the underlying shapes which would take way too long.

Atleast I think this is the only way to do it in Illu. Do you know of any better way? Or maybe some way to export it into a PNG with a specific color removed? Maybe with a plugin?

Thanks in advance!

@Pierce403

Are the texts outlined or expanded? If it is expanded you/printer can cut through the blue boxes or the white text will have it shapes embedded with the blue and then they can print only the blue plate.

Take time to study the difference of outlined/expanded and not expanded/editable white texts through the screenshot provided.

I have two set of rectangle with text here for example. the upper group is not outlined or it is still editable while the lower one is expanded.

It look like the same right but they are different. You can see it clearly if you are in outline view. Press Ctrl+Y or Go to Otline view. Here you can see the upper part is solid black or currently as text and the lower part have outline shapes

To achieve the transparent texts you must use patfinder options.(for this example i use divide. You can also use other option like minus front (given the white text is in front))

Note: I Use adobe Illustrator CS6 I dont know it the new versions are capable of doing it in AI format

In CS6 I also cannot save artboards directly in AI format but you have an Option for EPS and SVG which is also 100% vector and layers are kept tidy/arranged.

For me I do it in a long method. You may try it if you want to. Shown are screenshots of what options we can use.

Like yours I have no option for artboards to Ai.

But you can use EPS, SVG or PDF Instead (it will retain the vector). Be sure to check Use Artboards (select all or specific boards or details only)

Re-open the EPS files and delete unwanted areas then save now for Ai.
Or better rename the artboard files as <>.ai directly.
