I'm wondering if I need to convert fonts to outline when exporting to a jpg? I assume not, but it's been a while since I've had anything printed. I want to have the best quality but still have it be easy to send online.

I've tried a PDF but it's too large with the photos I'm using in the file.

I checked the major japanese font makers (C&G, DynaCom, Fontworks, Iwata, Morisawa, Motoya, Screen, Typebank, VDL) catalogs, but couldn't find a match. Most probably it is a "design" (デサイン書体, not gothic or ゴシック) font, with some edge rounding. The arrows were most probably added later, because one of the main visual elements of the anime were arrows.

@Rambettina927

Posted in: #Gimp #Transparency

I would like to create a reflection of a room on a window. My specific goal is to make sure that only the brighter parts are reflected. For this, I created a higher contrast copy of the picture of the room, where only the bright parts are visible, then I made it grayscale, than made the black color transparent. Now I have two layers, a map, where the info is where the basic picture should be transparent (the black parts), and the original picture.

How do I transform the original colored picture to be transparent on the darker parts as well?

Thank you!

The other two answers are very good.

I'd like to add that the "IMP" looks slightly shifted to the left compares to the "ART". This is mainly due to the whiteapace in the P of IMP and the A of ART.
You could try to move the IMP slightly to the right (will result in the logo being geomentrically imperfect) or adjusting the letters A and P. This font has no Serif but maybe adding a foot to the P might help.

@Rambettina927

I want to start off agreeing with all the comments so far - your school should definitely have a subscription to Creative Cloud that includes Typekit. However, I understand your dilemma as my university did not provide it either.
Possible solution... Have you tried packaging the InDesign file? Usually that creates a handy little "Fonts" folder within the package that includes all the fonts used in that document. I only recently started using Typekit so I haven't tried this myself, but I would think that would work.

 query : PS CS6: 'Rasterize image' fills selection with color I am using a pen tool to select an area in the image, which creates a new layer: After shape selection with a pen tool, make selection

@Rambettina927

Posted in: #Cs6 #PenTool #Rasterization

I am using a pen tool to select an area in the image, which creates a new layer:

After shape selection with a pen tool, make selection (pen tool -> right click -> make selection) is used (feather 0 px, anti-aliased un-ticked). Bucket tool is then used on the selected area where I receive a question if I would like to rasterize the image:

After pressing 'okay', image becomes rasterized (I assume), but my selected area is filled with a color (I get different colors, still haven't figured out how does PS link this color):

The problem with this fill is that its color bleeds to other pixels:

Finally, I still try and add the desired color (anti-alias un-ticked, contiguous ticked). The color is applied, but I am still left with the bleeding problems from the previous color (black in this case):

Here is another example after 'ok' was pressed to the image rasterization:

I would like to color just the selection and using just the color I choose. This sequence was working some time before, but I cannot do this anymore. I would be grateful if someone could point me to the right direction.

EDIT AND SOLUTION:
Everything works if the pen tool is chosen for 'path', rather than 'shape':

What I want is for the title to appear at the top of every page until that category is finished. (The next category then starts on the next page).

Is that possible? Essentially what I need to do is repeat the title at the top of every page.

@Rambettina927

When printing thin diagonal hatches on inkjet or laser printers, the lines often become uneven in terms of line width. The effect varies depending on printer type, line color/width and hatch angle. I guess that's because the printer's RIP applies different kinds of smoothing algorithm:

Because it appears on totally different printers, line widths and source applications, I'm quite sure it has something to do with a general printing difficulty.

Is there any kind of preflight correction or general design advice to avoid this effect?

Re-applying the Master Page to the page in question will swap out any Overridden objects that have not been modified. Any objects that have been modified will stay on the page and the master page items get placed behind.

The easiest way to apply a master page is probably to just drag the master page icon in the Pages Panel to the page below that you wish to apply it to.

You can also right click the page and select "Apply Master To Pages..."

@Rambettina927

I found nothing simple in Adobe land to do this for me. If you have or are willing to install ImageMagick, and you're comfortable with the command line, then the convert CLI tool is great.

I wrote this shell script which accepts widths and resizes an image until you hit enter without a number:

#!/bin/sh

oot=${1%.*}
while read -p 'width: ' -r && [ "$REPLY" != '' ]; do
convert "" -resize "$REPLY"x "$oot-$REPLY.png"
done

I named mine multi-resize.sh and put it in ~/bin/ so it's available everywhere.

You'd then execute it in a shell like so on a PNG of the original resolution:

$ multi-resize.sh foo.png
width: 96
width: 72
width: 48
width: 36
width:
$

You'll have foo-72.png, etc. in the same directory.

BTW, the fact that it is a .ttf file doesn't preclude it form having OpenType features. It only indicates that it has TrueType outlines.

@Rambettina927

While I cannot confirm this (I checked the Glyphs Manual and Online Help/Tutorials), it seems that the Glyphs App automatically converts the TrueType outlines to PostScript Outlines (lets remember that TT Outlines are 2nd Order, PS Outlines are 3rd order. Also, OTF can contain TT or PS Outlines, while TTF can contain TT Outlines).

If you are importing the Arial typeface (which I am almost sure is a TTF file) it means you are importing TT Outlines, then Glyphs converts to PS Outlines. Hence, less points. Here is Arial.ttf converted to PS Outlines in FontLab VI (29 nodes):

If you open the same font preserving the TT Outlines (in this example, opened in FontLab Studio 5), you get 37 nodes (remember, there is an implied node between successive control points):

In illustrator, type is most probably handled by a type engine that preserves the outlines format, and the quadratic points are just translated on the Create Outline command (try creating the outline of the bullet, a circle: it will create 8 nodes, coherent with the quadratic subjacent format...) Hence, more points are created. Here, in illustrator cs6:

Same 37 nodes.

Edit: BTW, answering the question: Glyphs "simplifies" the TT curve using Bezier Degree Elevation, i.e., converting the TT outline to PS.

I will begin with explaining the purpose of what I want to achieve or it would not make any sense why I'd want it.

So I work with cutting plotters and use illustrator for designing. There are several types of vinyls (with different thickness and other properties) and for one specific vinyl, the proper way to cut is, cutting a shape twice without lifting the pen/blade up. Like for a circle with 4 anchor points, blade goes from A->B->C->D->A->B->C->D->A

But I cant find any easy way to do it. I was able to make such a circle with a lot of trouble, you can look at it in the picture.

But again thats just circle, I need to make other shapes as well.

So any help please?

I'm using Photoshop CS6 (still). I'm by no means an expert, as most of my work is just pulling stuff out of PSDs for websites and some light photo editing.

For fun, I was attempting to fake a sign that I found online. I removed some text, grabbed the proper font, sized it, colored it, and felt the match was good. Then I hit the big "checkmark" (top of the PS window when text tool is active), which as I understand it, causes the text to be rendered or "rasterized".

When I went to rotate the text (edit -> transform -> rotate), I was able to match things, but the baseline of the font gets all jagged, as if the rotation is being done on a per-character basis. This is most apparent on the word "three" in the two "e's". How do I avoid this?

See attached image. The edited line should be obvious. :)

Are there any tricks or suggestions anyone can give me on how to give this look without copying the artwork? I've told her that a logo really should be simple so it's easy to remember and will work great on all platforms, but she really wants me to make it work. I've researched how to make a logo have energy and movement, but I'm not sure how to make this work because it's a stationary thing; the scribbles represent the energy in a person.

Her main idea is to have a figurine sitting in a hand (also not great at drawing lol)

Any suggestions would be great!

@Rambettina927

Posted in: #AdobePhotoshop #Layers #Mask

I have a grayscale image, and I want to make all the black pixels transparent, keep all the white pixels the same, and make all the grey pixels partially transparent based on how dark they are. In other words, I want to get rid of all the black in this image, but I want it so it looks exactly the same as it did before when it’s on top of a black background. I’ve looked online I found info about how to do this with a layer mask, and it seemed pretty straightforward, but every time I try to do it the result is darker than the original and I’m not sure why. I want it to look exactly the same over a black background as it does now. Can anyone advise me here?

Edit: My question was marked as duplicate, but no matter how much I try the exact instructions in other answers, the result is slightly darker than the original.

Edit 2: I’m going to explain exactly what I’m trying. I have the layer I’m trying to remove black from. It has a transparent background, so I have it in front of a black background layer. I select the entire image and copy merged while only that layer and the black background are visible. Then I create a completely white layer that I put under the layer I want to remover Black from and in front of the white background. I add a layer mask to the new white layer. I go to channels, deselect all and select the mask channel. I paste the image I copied. Then I make the original layer I wanted to remove black from invisible. At this point, I can see the masked white layer in front of the black background, and it looks almost exactly how it should, but slightly darker. When I toggle the visibility of the original layer, it’s clearly slightly brighter. What gives?

The image was not in grayscale mode, but it was truly grayscale. As in, going to image -> adjustments -> black and white, and moving the sliders changes nothing.

Edit3: a play-by-play of what I am trying and the result:

@Rambettina927

Sorry I don't have a fancy animation, but for others landing here, you can actually delete the 'inside handles' of any two points in a closed path:

Select the scissors tool and delete the line between two anchors
Press [esc] on the keyboard to exit the scissors tool
Double-clicking the shape to select it
Click the "Close Path" button in the top of the inspector window. This will 're-draw' the path segment you just deleted, except it will be perfectly straight (no handles). The handles on the other sides of the anchors will remain intact.

Note: If your path isn't closed to begin with, you can close it temporarily before you start so that the "Close Path" command works later (if you don't, you'll end up with two separate paths which can't be 'closed').

Cheers! Hope this helps someone :-)

And then you can use any other software able to plot the path corresponding to these coordinates.

For example, I used python and matplotlib to generate this pdf.
The script used to read the data from a file and create a pdf is below:

import numpy as np
import matplotlib.pyplot as plt

fig = plt.figure(facecolor='w')
ax = fig.add_subplot(111)

X = np.loadtxt("data.txt", delimiter=';').T
ax.plot(X[0], X[1])

plt.savefig('image.pdf', bbox_inches='tight')

Actually, you can also export the result in svg format with 'image.svg' in the last line.
You can then load the pdf (or svg) to illustrator (or inkscape in my case) and scale the curve to fit the original :

 query : Krita brush path I tried everything I could but I just can't figure out how to get Krita to apply a pixel brush along a vector path. I have read things that imply it should be possible

I tried everything I could but I just can't figure out how to get Krita to apply a pixel brush along a vector path. I have read things that imply it should be possible and it seems obvious but I just can't figure out how/
