@Sent6035632

No, this will not affect your "whole-site-seo". At least not directly.

The ranking of your pages within googles sitesearch results (site:yourdomain.tld) especially for newly indexed sites is affected by your internal linking structure.

You could describe it like that: "What gets linked most (internally), is most important for google."
(Although there is more behind it, but for starting up, this is enough to know)

Just make sure everything is linked well and tell the robots to index your homepage.

Have a look at your most important pages, link them internally well and smart - this should be a good thingy for starting.

@Sent6035632

Well, at first sight, it seems like you have issued an SSL certificate which you have installed in another domain and this will certainly trigger these warnings.

And you are not telling us which method you used to redirect the domains, there are ways to redirect the domains directly from your DNS panels, or with .htaccess files, or by using a Meta Command in the MySQL DB, or even by making a .php script for the redirection.

My opinion is that you should use

DNS redirect
.htaccess 301 redirects.

In case A you just add a redirect to the domains you want from within the DNS panel at your Domain registrar. This is the simplest and easiest solution.

Then you check again your SSL certificates and after that, you had to make sure that you have purchased the SSL for the right domain, i suggest to install it again.

And that's it.

Now if you want to use the redirect with the .htaccess file you have to NOT redirect your domains from the DNS panel of your registrar to the other domain, but point them in your webserver, in which you will have created the necessary webspace for their hosting, and then you will edit the .htaccess file.

Then you will open the root folder, in the webserver, in the webspace of the domain that is to be redirected, and If no .htaccess exists in your root folder currently, you can create one using an application like Notepad (or a similar plain text application).

The code for the file is contained in the next step.
Make sure that when you save your .htaccess file it begins with a “.”
Note that this file has no tail extension (e.g. “.com” or “.txt”)

Paste the following code into the .htaccess text file: .redirect 301 /old/oldURL.com www.newURL.com In the code, oldURL.com represents the landing page address your visitors will need to be redirected from while www.newURL.com represents the address you'd like your visitors redirected to.
There should be exactly one blank space between oldURL.com and Don't add www to the (old) URL in the first part of the code!

The code "301" is most commonly used on redirected sites and means "moved permanently".

It is an ecommerce site so if the site grows then a cdn will most likely be used. I believe you cant use a CNAME on a root domain. Would the best solution be to use a seperate external domain e.g. staticexample.com? If we did use an external domain, would that affect images in serps?

I'm having a slight problem, Wordpress.com doesn't play nice with bitcoin: URLs (it mangles them into {current page url}/{wallet address} ), so I need to do a redirect of some sort.

I found Adding «Donate» Bitcoin button in README.MD file GitHub repository on bitcoin.stackexchange.com but I can't get the redirect to work for some reason. I'm using the following code in the index.html file on my other web server, then used the URL to that page as the link for the donate button.

<script>

history.back();

It seems to work (in the sense that it redirects the user back to the page where they came from) but it doesn't open a bitcoin application on for example my phone.

Is there a place that defines each Google my business category? I am working on SEO for a Cleaning Company that provides janitorial services to local businesses/schools/hospitals..

Upon obtaining access to their Google Business Admin Page. I noticed that one of their sub categories was "Cleaners".

My initial thought was "Cleaners" doesn't mean what they think it means. I was thinking this word as a category would be served for "Dry Cleaning" and "Laundromat" businesses. However when you search "cleaners" on Google. The definition is someone who cleans.. And the first couple listings ARE cleaning/janitorial companies.

That being said ALL the local listings and other pages were indeed laundromats and dry cleaning businesses, which we don't want.

How do I find the exact definition for each Google category?

@Sent6035632

Posted in: #Sem #Seo

I'm considering changing my clients URL. Reasons being the following:
- We're rebranding his company
- Currently, the domain has the small town, outside of the city, in the name. However, for his specific practice, he generally owns the market for his niche locally, and doesn't have competitors for a much larger radius than just the small town the domain is in. So instead we want to include the city's name instead, which is available.
- The domain would be the same as the branding

Upon launch of the new domain, we'll also be launching a newly built website, new sitemap, URL structure, everything.

My thoughts were to redirect the entire domain to the new one as a 301 redirect, THEN redirect to HTTPS.

All older pages would redirect to the page that most clearly matches the topic, or to a 404 page.

According to Moz, all link equity would be passed. (Short article here: moz.com/blog/301-redirection-rules-for-seo ) However, it seems risky.

What is the true risk?

@Sent6035632

tl;dr: With a proper HTTP response status code 301 (Moved Permanently) from the old subpages to the new /service one you'll be good.

Long version: It's complicated. The key for this given problem is that you are looking at a low traffic regional page with local customers only. There are not many companies in that region offering these services (is there any competition at all?). It would be a different story otherwise. For a non-regional webpage it would probably be better to keep the current structure because each subpage is more specialized for the given key words.

What you want to add is developers.google.com/search/docs/data-types/local-business because that will give Google the needed information to make local search more powerful.

And give Google some 4-8 weeks time for some soul searching.

As closetnoc pointed out, remove public-facing links to 404 pages right away.

Also, convert those 404 pages to 410 pages since you're not dealing with them anymore.

When search engines see them as 410 pages, they will give up searching for them when trying to crawl your site because 410 means "gone" where as 404 means "not found at this time" and I say "at this time" because search engines will believe that the page will return at some point in the future.

The end result... a faster server, since each request to your server (regardless of origin) uses resources on your server (example: CPU, disk) for the processing.

You can segment users who have activated the event, and add the metric "total events" to the filter, and set to the number you want (total events = X).

The problem with this is it will return you all the users that activated the event X times during their entire lifetime (not just the selected data range).

There is a workaround if X is 10 or less, which is including users who went through a sequence of X steps with the event.

The limitation with this is X can't be more than 10, and it will only count through the previous 90 days, and you can't change that number to anything less (or more, or dynamically with the data range).

@Sent6035632

Don't know that I can answer why, but let's look at what's happening.

Your custom app, see how you are calculating current users, how often do you refresh with new data? When do your time periods start and end?
Look at how you are determining "returning" from "new" visitors.
for the API and Analytics: You're using 1 day, and you've set your date range appropriately. And that is based on number of unique visitors who initiated sessions on your app on that day (from 00:01-23:59), (per Google's documentation) and that could be totally different from the number of users at the time you look at your stats.
Why is it fluctuating? Perhaps something with the lag between getting the metric from Analytics and displaying it on your screen.

I would recommend that you confirm that your app is using the exact same time parameters as Google's API and Analytics. On your custom dashboard, could it be that some users are being double counted by that "user type" grouping? Make sure your comparison is apples to apples and then launch it fresh (clear history, cache, fresh browser window.)

Posted in: #Content #GoogleIndex #Indexing #Products #Seo

I have a site with a bunch of products on it, about 1600 to 1700 or so. Each product is a different WordPress post.

I don't really want Google to index all my posts, I would be happy for it just to index my home page and other pages I have on my site. About 4 other pages.

If i submit my site maps for just the pages, and home page, will the negatively affect my SEO ranking? The reason I ask is because my "posts" which are lists of products have images, price, and a link to the product. I don't need to have Google index all my posts as there isn't enough content to worry about that on them (Like description, uses, etc. etc..).

As from prior advice on here, it would impact me negatively more by having Google index all my posts since all my posts are just individual products on my site.

Would I be OK just having Google index my home page and pages rather than all my posts to?

For example

example.com/
example.com/about/
example.com/categories/
example.com/submit/
example.com/contact

and not all my "posts" (products)

Disclaimer: This is my first ProWebmasters post. I thought this would be an appropriate place for this question but if it is not I'm happy to remove it.

We use SSL For Free for our business site. We got the original certificate 95 days ago- and it expired 5 days ago. I am having trouble replacing the expired certificate.

The Nginx server is rebuilt once every 24 hours, pulling from the master branch on my Git Lab repository. The VM instance gets destroyed and replaced by a new one with a startup script that assembles and configures Nginx using the contents of the Git repository, including the SSL certificates.

When I updated the certificate and downloaded the root certificate and intermediate bundle and private key, I simply replaced the old certificates in the repository and rebuilt the web servers.

For some reason the website still uses the expired certificate days after replacing it.

This is very strange to me because the web server shouldn't have any trace of the old certificate, since they are rebuilt from a blank Ubuntu image and then pull the latest contents from Git.

I ran openssl x509 -in certificate.crt -text -noout on the certificates located in /var/www/ssl/ and confirmed that they are in-fact the new certificates.

This is the Nginx server config:

server {
listen 443 ssl default_server;
listen [::]:443 ssl default_server;
server_name foobar.com foobar.com;
ssl_certificate /var/www/ssl/chained.crt;
ssl_certificate_key /var/www/ssl/private.key;

ssl_ciphers 'ECDHE-RSA-AES128-GCM-SHA256:ECDHE-ECDSA-AES128-GCM-SHA256:ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384:ECDHE-ECDSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384:DHE-RSA-AES128-GCM-SHA256:DHE-DSS-AES128-GCM-SHA256:kEDH+AESGCM:ECDHE-RSA-AES128-SHA256:ECDHE-ECDSA-AES128-SHA256:ECDHE-RSA-AES128-SHA:ECDHE-ECDSA-AES128-SHA:ECDHE-RSA-AES256-SHA384:ECDHE-EC$

ssl_prefer_server_ciphers on;

ssl_dhparam /var/www/ssl/dhparams.pem;

root /var/www/html;

location / {
if ($http_x_forwarded_proto = "http") {
return 301 $host$request_uri; }
if ($request_uri ~ ^/(.*).html$) {
return 301 /;
}
try_files $uri $uri.html $uri/ /404;
}
}

Any ideas on what could be causing this? Thanks!

(I've already tried clearing my Chrome SSL Cache)

(SSLLabs shows that the site still uses the old certificate, but that other than the certificate being expired, nothing else is wrong with it)
