I can only learn with e-books or very good written guides, i can't learn with videos because i don't understand spoken english very well and also i lose my concetration, when i read something my mind absorb the information far more easier, thus lynda.com or youtube aren't for me, i like videos if they have subtitles only but there aren't any so i would rather learn with books, the problem is that the best books cost a lot of $ and i can't afford any money at all, i can barely afford anything, can anyone suggest something? i want to learn everything about graphic design, i really like it but im stuck, self learning is tough.

Running latest versions of Affinity Designer and Photo on - admittedly - oldish laptop but always without a hitch until recent. When trying to use my Wacom Intuos tablet for these two apps, I seem to lose control over my pen's behaviours.

Document/Image scrolls immediately out-of-centre down; trying to bring it back up by scrolling manually upward [trying to center the document] doesn't work. Document stays down.
Pen seems to open menus erratically, only in Designer and Photo [?]

All this is new; didn't happen until I upgraded to new Designer and Photo versions this morning. Have settings changed?

I have enabled 'Windows Ink' in the Wacom control panel, but don't know what else to do.

Any idea anyone?

Sometimes, you mistakenly pressed "Q" key and the page converts into Quick Mask mode. and while dragging any layer on the canvas, you will see red border dragged through.

Make sure that you haven't pressed Q.

Another thing is if in case you have unchecked Auto Select, that works on layers. then also you can not drag the layers.

and so on.

Can anyone recommend a font that might be suitable?

I have been asked to do some design work for a company logo for my family friend's big business. It is my first proper design work which involves designing for someone outside friends and family.

I was wondering what payment method would be best to use in the UK and won't look completely unprofessional? Should I create a personal paypal and receive payment through that or is it ok to just send bank details and ask them to pay into my account?

I would like to tell them my preferred payment methods alongside my design mockup files so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

@Shakeerah625

So I'm currently dealing with some high res textures for celestial bodies that I need to stitch together. The problem is, they're in parts because of the overall size meaning I'll have to manually place over 1,000 images next to one another to build the overall texture.

I can't use the photomerge tool as it's not reliable enough and was wondering if there's a script or something that, when dragging in a selection of files, they can automatically be placed below one another.

For example, the texture is 31 images vertical and 62 horizontal. If I drag in one set of 31, I'd like for the second image to import directly below the previously imported one, the 3rd below the 2nd, the 4th below the 3rd and vise versa. I really do hope something like this or similar exists otherwise I'm going to be suffering from carpel tunnel!

Thanks for your help, anything to ease this process would be a joy!

@Shakeerah625

Posted in: #AdobePhotoshop #Background #Cs6 #Gif #Overlay

Good Afternoon!

My problem is a bit complex, so this I'm going to break it into some topics:

My project: The project consists in a static background overlayed by some imagery elements and a gif (the blue/purple circle is a gif).

The problem: However, I'm having problems editing the overlaying images (the girl's render, for example). Whenever I try to edit any element aside from the gif - adding a shadow to the render on f(x) for instance, which is my current issue - only one frame is modified, and the other frames remain the same.

What I've tried so far: The obvious solution I thought of was selecting all the frames at once, holding shift. However, that only solved my problem partially. (when I tried to paste new elements to the composition and move them around).

The other solution I came up with, based on my previous experience, was to copy the whole static elements and paste them into a new project, editing what I wanted to edit onto the new tab and pasting the whole thing into the gif project again.
Everything worked fine up until now. Then I decided to add some shadow to the render image. Things went downhill again.

With shift pressed, I selected all frames and clicked on the render to add a shadow. However, the only frame that was modified was the one that was visible. I then decided to add shaddow to the single image manually. Started from frame 2 to 15. When I clicked on frame 1, everything reseted. After I added the shadow to frame 1, I clicked on frame 2 anda the f(x) shadow was gone! Same thing to the remaining 13 frames!

I copied all the background and pasted on a new layer without the shadow thing and added the shadow there. Pasted back and, surprise: same issue. Only the the visible frame had the shadow (even though I had selected everything at once).

Combining all the gif layers into a smart object didn't work either...

The strange fact is that the render's white outline (check the screenshot), which is also a f(x) feature, worked just fine! (with the copy-and-paste-into-a new-project solution)

Am I missing something or is my photoshop bugging?

Thanks in advance

@Shakeerah625

This doesn't really answer OP's question (which was about .otf files), but I figured I'd provide some instruction on merging .ttf files together, since it might get you on the right track for other font formats.

If you want to bundle a bunch of .ttf files together, you need to generate a .ttc. You can do this easily in FontForge.

Download FontForge

Go to the FontForge website and follow the instructions to download and install the software.

Gather your .ttf files

I'm using RedHat's Liberation Mono as an example. It is a "well behaved" font, meaning that everything is named properly. If it isn't, look at Chad's answer which talks about going into the "Element > Font Info" in FontForge to cleanup the names.

Open all the .ttf files you want to combine

Under the "File" menu, select "Open"

Navigate to the .ttf files, shift + click to select them all and hit "OK" to open.

Generate the .ttc

Now you will see all the glyphs of the fonts you just opened. From any of these windows, click "File -> Generate TTC...".

In this dialog, simply select all the fonts you want to combine. I unselected the "Untitled1" project, which was the default project when I opened the program. Click "Generate" after that.

Confirm proper generation

If you did everything right, you should have a single .ttc file that bundles all your .ttf font face styles together. You can check this in your favorite font program, like FontBook (on macOS).

Congratulations

I'm no font expert by any means, so I don't know what other packaging options you have, if you didn't want to use .ttf or .ttc files. It was good enough for what I needed.

And to save others some trouble, I also figured out that the "Element -> Merge Fonts..." dialog, while it sounds like it does what you want, simply merges the glyphs of two fonts together. This only is useful if one font is missing some glyphs that you want to fill in from a different font. As far as I can tell, you cannot assign multiple glyphs to a code-point (which is what styling is; different representations of the same character). However, I could be mistaken!

You can also export it as PNG or JPEG.
And then right click on your picture. Then Print (On windows) and instead of choosing your printer choose save as PDF.

This will create a picture PDF much lower size than the photoshop PDF and impossible to reuse.

var id170 = charIDToTypeID( "RGBC" );

When I run this in Photoshop it does work but since I have a lot of colours to select, I want to know

If there is a more efficient way to do it, using less lines of code. It could be either with the colour range or another tool.
I would prefer to use hexadecimal values but I have no idea how to write it. I managed to change it to RGB but it was originally using Lab colours.

In this example, the hex would be 00ff00

@Shakeerah625

I currently have importing XML in InDesign working, but I'd like to work with multiple masters so that the page design alters every other spread.

Something like:

[ A-left | A-right ]
[ B-left | B-right ]
[ A-left | A-right ]
.....
[ B-left | B-right ]
[ A-left | A-right ]
[ B-left | B-right ]

Where content on the A masters is something like:

Heading |
---------------|
Description | Project Image
---------------|
Author Details |

And the B master would be a reflection of the A master:

| Heading
|---------------
Project Image | Description
|---------------
| Author Details

I tried moving my XML structure from my first page, to one of the A master pages, but this seems to mess up the XML structure, with multiple root elements, one per page with the master applied.

My current XML structure looks like:

students
-- student
|-- heading
|-- description
|-- project image
-- author details
|-- forename
|-- surname
|-- supervisors
-- major

@Shakeerah625

CSS like the following is enough to implement the 2nd solution above:
#nav .notJumbo a[href='/']::after {
content: ' ';
font-size: 2.5rem;
font-weight: 500;
line-height: 1.2;
}

This adds, to the first line of the left-hand column, an invisible character (white-space) which has the same font metrics as the text at the top of the right-hand column -- this means the two line-boxes (left and right) have the same size: because they now include same-sized text.

Note:

The selector is whatever is needed to select the first anchor (whose href references the web site's home page in this example)
The content is an empty space, a white-space, here; you could replace that with a unicode thin-space or zero-width-space
The other properties are whatever are necessary (including font-family if needed) to match the font and line-box metrics of the first line (e.g. the heading) of the right-hand column.

I suppose this solves the technical (implementation, how to) part of the question.

I'd still welcome other answers, which may comment on the design.

@Shakeerah625

Posted in: #Css #Typography #WebsiteDesign

I have a web page with two columns:

The narrow left column is a vertical navigation bar with a small (or ordinary) sized font
The main right column contains the content, which has a mix of fonts (e.g. it starts with a large-size <h1> heading.

Here is a screenshot of the top of the page:

My questions are:

Don't you agree that it's important, that the top of the text in the left-hand-column (e.g. ".NET") should align with the top of the text in the right-hand column (e.g. "WYSIWYG")?
Is there any design alternative (any way to change the design, perhaps add any extra elements to the design, to make that alignment less important or unimportant?
If (or assuming that) it is important, how is it implemented?

I think it's wrong by two pixels at the moment, i.e. the right-hand text is two pixels too low.

I think it's difficult (perhaps impossible) to implement using CSS because:

Font height is complicated
The two bits of text are different sizes and different font faces
The font families aren't even known at design-time (it depends on which fonts exist for the user's web browser)

Is this a known problem? Is there a solution?

Should I instead try to align the baselines of the two columns, to look something like this:

But I don't think I know how to implement that either, using CSS.

Normally it (the baselines of the two bits of text aligning) would happen automatically, except here the two bits of text are not really in the same line (they're not both inline the same line box, in one parent block): because each column is a separate <div>.

This should probably be posted on the Adobe forum somewhere but I thought I'd post it here as well. Curiousity has got the better of me.

So I've noticed over multiple document types that Indesign doesn't seem to display things the same way or XY location as illustrator or pdfs. I'm wondering if this is to do with how it previews the images? Or if this is an issue with my settings somewhere? Its particularly noticeable with fonts.

For example -
Import either a PDF or a .Ai file on X 0,0 - crop to crop on an A4 artboard.
I then try and recreate both my guides and my textboxes using the X and Y left anchors, the same font formatting and details directly from illustrator - and this happens.
(ignore the colour its different so you can see the two more clearly)

I've even done a test using stock Illustrator/Indesign fonts.

I have the same problem with PDFs, and this has happened on other documents I just decided to document it this time. Obviously Its not helpful when working across a whole bunch of Adobe software, or if you need to recreate something with identical measurements for whatever reason.

Perhaps someone knows a work around or how to fix it? Is this an update to the textbox over versions?
Or what the cause is -

Thanks a bunch

However every time I try this, my edges look jagged or the images look very unsharp. The picture above doesn't seem to have this problem at all.

I tried flattening to bitmap; it results in an unsharp scale and jagged edges. I tried importing a symbol; it can't be scaled down easily. I tried exporting to photoshop and rotating there; even more horrible jagged edges and weird problems.

The best result I can manage to get:

Export artboard to .png at smaller size
Rotate png layer

But as you can see, it still leaves jagged edges:

I'm out of ideas on how to achieve clean, non-jagged edges on rotation, but I see so many people doing this. What is the best approach?

I'm a fan of Impallari Type's Quattrocentro. It has a certain classic elegance that I like, and it is very readable on screens. Unfortunately it lacks italic variants, making it difficult to use in many places. What free fonts might capture what I like about Quattrocento, but offer me proper italics in addition to a bold?

The use case is for the web site for a small event I help host. Any expenses are entirely out of my pocket, so I'd prefer free, but I could probably justify a modest one-time price.

These are the elements of Quattrocento I've failed to find a reasonable match for:

Relatively high x-height.
Relatively wide characters
Relatively light weight.
Modest differences in stroke width. ("Old-style" serif, perhaps?)
A certain "swooshiness" that evokes calligraphy for me. The tail on the "y" really captures this for me.

I have been trying to separate the frames of this gif from its background. At first, I tried using the paths tool to achieve this, and it did work on the first two frames. However, as I went on to the other frames, I stopped being able to delete the background. I am able to select it, but deleting it is a no-go. It should be stated that, in the beginning, I wasn't able to delete the background in any of the slides at all until I changed the mode to RGB (that was why I was able to delete the backgrounds in 2 out of the 19 frames). It should also be stated that the background is not a single color but an actual mixture of colors, some of bleed into the character art. So if I was to select the color select tool on a color within the background and delete it, then some small specks of the character art will be deleted too.

What is the process that I need to take in order to remove the backgrounds from the multiple frames within this gif, knowing that I have activated RGB mode? What am I doing wrong here?

Thanks for the help, in advance.
