A little tip on using any of these methods (especially the script) on mac: You can easily process files from completely different file paths by creating aliases to the .indd files and putting those in the "input folder". That way you don't have to mess with the original file structure or like copy files over to the input folder every single time you make changes.

A client recently emailed me asking for the source files from a project I did for them two years ago. I don't have the source files since it was such a long time ago and the client said it was very unprofessional and strange to not keep the source files for all the projects I do.

Is there a customary length of time that you should be expected to keep source files? Should you keep all your source files for projects and never get rid of them?

@Shelley591

Posted in: #AdobeIllustrator #Layers #Pixel #Vector

I have a composition in Illustrator where I want to erase some parts of a Raster (non-vector) layer.

Basically there are drops of coloured ink floating towards the PoV, and the background image has flat (vector) circles. And I want some of the colored drops to be hidden behind circles of the background and sometimes be hidden behind the background:

Sometimes I want the yellow ink drops to be hidden by the blue circles, sometimes I want them to be visible in the blue circle and hidden behind the purple background (it's abstract).

I think the easiest would be to "erase" in circle shapes the Pixels layer like I would do in Photoshop. But to make this simple I don't want to bring Photoshop into it.

EDIT: The raster layer is a transparent PNG. The raster layer cannot be recreated in vector (it's a photo of actual liquid drops), which is why it was brought as pixels in Illustrator. The vector shapes are easy to edit (simple circles)

How can I achieve this effect?

Let's say I have a shape. A simple shape, like a rectangle. And I need to add an anchor point at an exact point of a line. I can do this by doing some simple math and use guides to mark that point, and of course it works. Or I could just zoom in until I see pixel by pixel and then place the anchor even without guides.

However, I was wondering if there's a way to place an anchor by adding a numeric input. Say you right click on a path and there's an option (if it exists probably with some key(s) combination) to add the anchor at X px or X % from the top or bottom or left or right or beginning of path or relative size or whatever.

Does this (or something like this) exists in Photoshop?

query : Re: Hyphenation of particular languages in InDesign Is it possible to add new hyphenation rules to InDesign, and what languages does it have built-in hyphenation for?

@Shelley591

It is possible both to add new hyphenation rules to existing language dictionaries in InDesign and to add new language dictionaries.

Adding a language (Albanian)

The exact steps you have to take to add a dictionary for a new language vary according to your OS (operating system) and which version of InDesign you’re using. There is a very clear and extensive guide on Adobe’s help pages, which will help you.

There aren’t many Albanian Hunspell dictionaries available, but there is one on GitHub, based on the older Shkenca dictionaries. Note that these are not made by a corporative entity, but seemingly by a single person, so they may contain unspotted errors.

To install Albanian:

download the .aff and .dic files from the GitHub page
rename them to sq_AL.aff and sq_AL.dic respectively
create a folder named sq_AL in the proper location (see step 4 on the Adobe help page) and put the two files in that folder
open the file Info.plist in the proper location (see step 5 on the Adobe help page). Note: If you’re on a Mac, once you find AdobeHunspellPlugin.bundle, you have to right-click and select “Show package contents” to see the subfolder Contents where the plist file is located
locate the lines in the file that say <key>HyphenationService</key>, <key>SpellingService</key> and <key>UserDictionaryService</key>. Immediately following each of those lines is a start tag <array>, followed by a list of <string>xx_XX</string> tags. Add a string tag <string>sq_AL</string> to that list. It doesn’t matter where in the list you put it.

The next time you restart InDesign, you should be able to choose Albanian as one of the languages you can set text in.

Adding words

As you mention in your comment, you can add your own words in addition to the ones already present in the Hunspell dictionary by using the Edit → Spelling → User Dictionary options.

The interface there is intuitive enough, but if you need more help, there is also an Adobe help page on spell-checking and language dictionaries.

When you add a new word, you can click the Hyphenate button to suggest an automated hyphenation rule. This rule is based on the hyphenation rules set out in the Hunspell dictionary itself and will usually, but not always, be accurate. If you wish to tweak it to be absolutely how you want it, you can set the hyphenation options yourself.

Points 6 and 7 in the section Add words to dictionaries on the Adobe help page explains the syntax:

Tildes (~) indicate possible hyphenation points.
Type one tilde (~) to indicate the best possible hyphenation points, or the only acceptable hyphenation point, in the word.
Type two tildes (~~) to indicate your second choice.
Type three tildes (~~~) to indicate a poor but acceptable hyphenation point.
If you want the word never to be hyphenated, type a tilde before its first letter.

Neither are we, as we don't know what your brand is, what industry you are in, what context you are using the animation in, who your competition is, etc.

In other words, context is everything.

There are, of course, plenty of animated logos. Nearly every film distributor has one. Netflix has one. NFL. Etc.

Like a static logo, all that matters is that a) it's done well and b) takes into consideration the context it will be used in.

The only valid answer to this is:

the best resolution is the one recommended to you by the particular vendor you are going to use to print the T-shirts.

Why? Because there's too many variables for us to guess at that will go into the calculation as to what the best resolution would be. The variables would include:

the style and type of your design
the type of material being printed onto
the type of ink being used to print
the method of printing being used
applicable line screens
the preferences of the vendor

I realize that there are a lot of questions like mine and I read them all, but something is fighting in my head trying to find the connection between the written answers and my actual photoshop's behavior.
So everywhere people say that when you change the PPI without "resample" checked - you will change the size of the document and opposite - if you change it with "resample" checked - you will change the amount of pixels (add or subtract pixels).
Now maybe I am really distracted and not paying attention to what is written BUT when I uncheck "resample" and change the PPI the image doesn't change at all, but when I do check it and change the PPI - the image size changes so it's opposite to what is written in every blog... I am sure that there is something I don't logically understand in all this.

Posted in: #AdobeIllustrator #AdobePhotoshop #Autocad

Let's say I have some image that I'd like to somehow make into a 3D model. What I'd like to do is to convert each "blob" from the image into a solid object so that I can view the geometry from any angle I want, assign materials to the solids, and render for some nice visuals.

I've attached a small part of one of the images below that you can use to try

I tried following this type of a workflow:

Use threshold in Photoshop on the image to clean it up a bit, but I don't want to lose all the side "blobs". So don't set the threshold too low.
Import to Illustrator and "trace image" to get it to vector format. Play around with the advanced options to get a good number of edges while keeping relatively smooth lines.
Export from Illustrator as an AutoCAD drawing.
Extrude all the created objects in AutoCAD to a small thickness, so that each blob has some "body" to it.
Assign a material to the solids and render using desired settings.

The problem is after exporting as an AutoCAD drawing, there are many splines and hatches in AutoCAD. Some of them are not joined, some of them have overlapping sides, etc. It becomes extremely difficult to extrude efficiently. Since the actual image is much larger, I cannot individually fix every edge.

Are there any other more efficient methods or workflows for doing this? Or any suggestions for handling a large number overlapping hatches/splines in AutoCAD?

@Shelley591

If you have data, this is very easy, just select the graph, copy it, then paste into a .ai file and it will be converted to vectors automatically.

If you have an image, it will be a bit more complex (well, a couple additional steps) and you'll need PS as well.

Assuming this is the case, open your image in Photoshop, then adjust curves until the grid lines disappear.

After this, you have 2 options:

Option 1 (easier on Illustrator): Go to Filter --> Stylize --> Find Edges. Apply. This will give you an slightly wider line.
Option 2: With Magic Eraser Tool, delete all the white. Once done, select your layer, then Blending Options --> Stroke and use Size:1; Position: Center

Now open the image in Illustrator. Click on the graph to select it and go to Image Trace on the top of your screen. If you used Option 1, simply choose the 3 colors option and it will render an exact line.

If you chose Option 2, select Technical Drawing (or play with custom values). In this case, you'll get a very close approximation, although not exactly the same, but you can adjust it (or if the small differences don't matter, simple leave it as is!)

By doing this, I got this result (gray line is my version, overlapping yours)

@Shelley591

EDIT: Sorry, I missed the cmd line part, and really have no idea, so leaving this for other users or if the OP changes his mind, but please mods delete if unsuitable.

The easy way in Photoshop (looks like a lot of step, but it's really easy and fast once you know it):

start by duplicating the layer. Do it twice just in case (so ctrl+j twice)
Right under the active layer, add a layer and cover it with a very different and distinctive color. I usually use a soft pink for this. This layer is just so you can easily see what you're doing.
Now, back to your top layer go to Image --> Adjustments --> Curves or simply ctrl+m
Adjust curves until colors get really different and almost plain. This means you need to go extreme. Here are my settings:

Now select the Magic Eraser Tool. Give it a high Tolerance value. I chose 60 for your image, and also unchecked the contiguous box (this is really important). Apply it on the black area. You'll end with something like this:

Now, simply ctrl+click on the active layer so you select its contents. Disable the pink layer and select the copy you originally made (or your background) and hit ctrl+j
The above will create a new layer with the original colors. Disable all other layers and you're done!
