I am looking to set up dynamic DNS in order to make accessing a home server easier. Is there any way I can get around using 3rd party site (like dyndns.org).

Is there a way to set up dynamic dns myself or are there really good reasons for using those sites?

A major concern of mine is the fact that I want to use my own domain name and that usually costs on these sites.

Even though DynDNS isn't free, it is cost effective.

You can do it yourself if (1) you already have control over a DNS server running on the internet, and (2) can write a set of scripts to recreate what DynDNS does.

If you don't, then it will cost you way more time and money to do it yourself than what DynDNS or No-IP would cost.

Cut back by two or three cups of coffee per month, and DynDNS pays for itself.

I would suggest that you budget -0 per year as a minimum for running your own website. That should cover:

Domain registration: - per year
Website hosting: - per year
DNS hosting: [CO]- per year

Since you are spending at to 0 per month for your home internet connection and your computer cost at least several hundred dollars, the costs for running your own website are peanuts in comparison.

Once you get at least 30 pages of quality content posted on your site, sign up for Google AdSense and put ads on your pages. If you keep adding content, you will be able to recoup your costs through ads within a year or two and your website will be self-supporting.

I would suggest that you don't host your website on your home computer. Rather, look for a "shared hosting" plan that costs to per month. 3rd party hosting can be much more reliable and you don't need to rely on dynamic DNS.

If you do host at home, bite the bullet and pay for the dynamic DNS services. DynDns looks like it is /year right now. I've used zonomi.com/ which is significantly less. Here is a resource that maintains a list of dynamic DNS providers with costs: dnslookup.me/dynamic-dns/.
