We have an event site and we noticed GoogleBot crawling our old events, say from five years ago, which also includes Teams within the event, which could be 100 teams per event or more.

With that said these events are irrelevant except for users that may want to see past results, so they can't be taken down.

We noticed that the GoogleBot IP is causing our service to slow down because of so many hits to our site. We are only showing upcoming events in our SiteMap, no past events.

My question is should I use a meta tag like noindex, nofollow on the entire event, or nofollow for the landing page of the event, without hurting my overall site with Google?
