Data merge, or data integration, is a software function which compiles a final file from multiple sources of information. Typically, a "base" document is used with designated fields for data and a "data" file is used which contains variable data information. When a data merge is performed, variables from the "data" file are inserted into the designated fields of the "base" document and a new document is created.

Data merge is commonly used to insert names and/or email addresses into bulk letters or other documents, where it is called mail merging.
