In design, a "placeholder" refers to a piece of the design - either art, photos, or text - which is designed to simply show overall size, shape, and placement. Before a design is finalized the placeholder is replaced with the desired pice of art, text, or photography for final production.
Placeholders are often used to allow designers to "flesh out" or explore design possibilities prior to all aspects of the design being ready for production.
