I'm aspiring to be a front end developer and as far as that goes I am pretty comfortable coding for the frontend. I would like to improve my design skills.

I would like to know what to look for when critiquing a website, what aspects of the website I should look at and what questions to answer.

Any information regarding the way you go about critiquing a design or a website, and any checklists or documents you follow would be greatly appreciated

Cheers.

First of all let me just say that as a front end developer you have to trust the designer that you work with that she/he knows best. There are some things you might want to understand but even after you read a little bit about it it will never replace 4 years in design school and years of experience, so don't call it "critique" as if reading a couple of wikipedia posts will put you in the same level as the designer and make your design opinions matter as much.

That being said... here are some subjects you might want to educate
yourself (the tip of the iceberg): Typography Grid
Responsive design Image making Data visualisation
Hierarchy Composition Branding and Identity
