I'm curious how the a printing effect (I'm not entirely sure what it's called so feel free to enlighten) similar to Tom Haugomat's work is achieved. An example of this can be seen here (click for full-size version):



As you can see in the example, the edges of the shapes are not very smooth. It seems pretty difficult to achieve this sort of subtle shape overlap and shape edging in Illustrator, so advice is welcome!
