: Heuristics for generating website link color, based on a website theme's most prominent color? Let's say that you're designing a website's color scheme, and choose a particular color as the base
Let's say that you're designing a website's color scheme, and choose a particular color as the base of your color scheme - this color will be used as the website's main menu bar's background color, and thus, will feature prominently on every page of the site.
Are there heuristics, rules of thumb, or algorithms, that can be used to generate a color for the website's links, which will "go well" with the base color, and create an aesthetically pleasing effect? That is, I'd like the link color to complement the base color, and I'd like to avoid link colors that are excessively light or dark, or that are too close to grey or brown. I'd especially appreciate recommendations of heuristics that are well-defined enough that they can be implemented in code. Thanks.
