I'm following this tutorial

At the 6:13 mark, he selects 2 circles, applies "Difference" (Ctrl + -) and gets a beautiful result.

However, when I do it the 2 circles are deleted completely.

Can someone please explain what am I missing or any other method to get the same result using Inkscape 0.92?

Edited: here is the screen shot of what I have


I was able to get a similar effect by doing "stroke to path" on the outer object, but it reduces only the actual lines, while in the video it some how remove some part of the fill, please clarify...



This is the result I'm trying to achieve (the left part - the right part is just a copy of the to object before the "difference" function
