I have a logo in Illustrator CS5 that I'm converting to all black. The inner two graphics sit on top of each other - which is fine in the full color version since they're different colors - but for the black version I need them to be separated by some sort of transparent stroke around the palm tree so they're not one big blob. I have tried combining them with all of the pathfinder shape modes but nothing is working. I know this needs to be some sort of compound path, but I cannot figure out how to achieve what I need! Please help!

In the example image below, the white stroke around the tree is what I need to be transparent to the background (the green is just to make things visible for this example).
