I'm very new to the graphic design world, taking interest after the desire to create my own logos for my musical work and personal marketing interests. Due to its mainstream use, I chose Illustrator as the platform of choice to develop a basis for digital art. As a mechanical engineer, I have experience with several CAD platforms, particularly Siemens NX and AutoCAD. These programs are similar in the sense of creating shapes and models in a vector approach, albeit 3 axis.
Where I struggle with Illustrator is I don't quite understand how to fully take advantage of point and line constraints. In the 3D world, I'm used to easy application of constraining shapes e.g. targeting two anchors or lines, and selecting which constraint (angental, angle, anchor point to line, datum etc.) you desire to maintain the object's shape while drawing the proposed object via trace. Though Illustrator promotes it's Smart Guides system to predict snap points, it's not as smart as I'd prefer.
Is there a tool, or series of functions I'm missing to have a more precise control when trying to design custom shapes? It's rather frustrating when trying to accurately merge shapes to create a seamless line, then having the placement off by a pixel or two.. Even if the Smart system claims the anchor points are resting on the same tangental line.
