I love InDesign's masters can be hard to work with. Partly that's because they're complicated, but it's also because they're so hard to see.
Example situations of frustration:
If I click on an unaltered master object, nothing happens. Is that because it's from the master, from a locked layer, because it's behind another object, or because I misclicked?
I've been setting up a master, and I have a bunch of sample pages based on the master with basically the same content, but some of them have been lots of overrides and others have noneā¦, or maybe few. I can't tell at a glance because I'd have to click on everything!
I made a bunch of new pages from a master, and I plan on overriding them one by one. At a glance, I can't tell which was the last one I modified.
I don't want to be frustrated anymore. What viewing options do I have to make it really clear which objects are locked to a master, overridden from a master, or completely independent from a master?
Edit: The answer to this question suggested using dedicated layers to manage elements from each master, which I've implemented. It feels like a partial solution because it helps differentiate between master and local elements. But what about overridden elements?
