I'm trying to essentially make this shape in a flat SVG.



Of course when I use the 'Outline" command to convert the outlines to shapes, I no longer have a fill and can see through the hole in one shape to the next, which I don't want.

It seems like I should be able to use the "Subtract" command on the two shapes to give me the bottom piece of the rectangle, which I could then combine with a duplicate of the top rectangle, but that gives me this weird thing.

This would be pretty easy in Illustrator. Am I going about this wrong?
