I am building up my page header in a Word 2016 document. Adding a custom field and choosing the option StyleRef shows an option box where I can choose Heading 1, Heading 2, etc. It works fine for Heading 1 and adds the chapter title in the header of every page.

Now, I would like to add the current section (that being heading 2) to the header as well. In a format such as:


The chapter heading | The section heading


The issue now is that my first heading 2 is in my chapter 3. If I follow the same practice and add heading 2 with StyleRef, then it works fine from chapter 3 and onwards. But a heading 2 is also shown on all page preceding that.

It seems that words cannot cope with a heading 2 not being present from the beginning. It inserts the heading 2 that comes first, even though it has not come yet. On every page until it encounters the first one.

How do I remove them from all pages before the first Heading 2 appears?
