So I've run into this issue a couple times before. Every once in a while the eyedropper tool seems to refuse to select the color I choose and would instead opt for complete black. Here's a video to clarify.

Probably the Appearance box in the Eyedropper Options is checked.

After selecting the eyedopper hit Enter .

Unckeck the Appearance in booth panels.

No need to hold shift .

If trying to pick up a color from a raster image you must hold down the Shift key when clicking for the eyedropper to pick up the color.
