I'm trying to create a title where every individual letter is a solid colour but the whole sentence forms a gradient.

The only method that I have found is to calculate the total number of letters in my title, and then use a colour gradient maker like this one www.perbang.dk/rgbgradient/ to get the HTML letter codes for each colour of my gradient. Then I have to fill every letter individually with a fill tool. This is time consuming and I'm wondering if there's a better way using a gradient tool in Gimp or Inkscape.
