I am working on a multiple-layered image in GIMP 2.8.16 on a Mac.
I add a new transparent layer on top, and it is visible. The only other layers visible are a background fill of a contrasting color to the foreground color and a guide marking on an otherwise transparent layer. I click on the text tool and type a few characters; the name of the text layer changes to the text that I'm typing but nothing shows on the screen. The text box is inside not only the canvas but also the edges of the visible layer. (I vastly expanded my canvas in the hopes that I'd catch straying text. No luck.) No area is selected. Merging the floating text down doesn't change that.
On one attempt the text did show up, but I'm not sure what made it work just that once (Same font, same colors, but not the size I needed).
I see this question asked over and over again all over the place but never really answered.
What am I doing wrong?
The answer given to Text not showing up on Gimp 2.8 (make sure the text is being added on the top layer) did not help me; I don't see any other useful dups.
