is there a specific way of creating curved lines like the picture I have posted here through the pen tool?

Or is it only done through a series of masks on pill shaped vectors?

I cant for the life of me find any direct answers online. I've tried using the pen tool and using shift to make the curve even, but I can only keep the curves on a straight path. Im dying to figure this out!
