So I'm tutoring some people at a prison for Math and CompSci, they're working toward their degrees so that they can have some qualifications when they get out to get a job. Problem is I'm mostly a Math guy with just a few light programming skills and no web design knowledge. Right now they're in a course on web design, the professor assigned the Duckett book HTML & CSS, and the students are not super satisfied with the book. A lot of them also want to start jumping to JavaScript and also want to study Adobe Photoshop since they're getting out soonish and want to make sure they hit the job market with these skills. They find the Duckett book a little confusing and also feel it doesn't cover stuff that seems really applicable. I'm not sure how accurate those complaints are, but they wanted me to do some research about other books they could order for their studies.

I did a google search, but most of the results don't seem trust-worthy for some reason, like either they're really just ads paid for by the publisher, or the recommender doesn't sound very well-informed, or whatever. I can't really back up that suspicion, it's just my spidey-senses. Anyway, the best I found was this Quora post: www.quora.com/What-are-the-best-books-on-web-design But even that didn't really lead me to a clear winner other than, for JavaScript, to use the Duckett book for that too. Not sure how happy the guys will be with that recommendation.

I saw one recommendation on this website, here: Studying Graphic Design for Web Design The basic advice was to do project-based learning and expand your skills on a need basis. These guys are already doing that, building as much of a website as they can, but they're not allowed to use the internet, so when they need extra information, they need to get it from a book in their library.

So anyway, basic question is, can you point to fairly simple, clear, and real-world-application focused books on any of the following topics? First and foremost website design, but also HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Photoshop.
