You can achieve this effect in After Effects. Import the image in a new comp and add the channel combiner effect to the layer. Set 'from' to max RGB and 'to' to alpha, then you can add remove colour matting.
This is essentially AE treating the layer like a flattened one with multiply or screen on it, and uses the luminosity value for transparency.
