Is there a function to create a buffer of a path and handle it as a separate object? I am using Adobe Illustrator CS4.
EDIT, further description:
I have a line diagram in vector format, representing a 'vertical cut'/profile through a landscape. Below the thin line (in black), which represents the surface, I want to add a parallel 'buffer-like' area, representing the type of soil in the underground by colours.
Of course, the easiest solution would be to copy the line, move it downwards a little bit and merge both lines to a closed polygon. However, in the steep parts, the space between the two lines is very small which makes it look disharmonic, all in all. Here is a quick drawing of an example:
So, what I think I need, is a buffer zone around the line/path, which I can then cut by the path and use the part below it.
