We can approach this problem in many ways.
Using a plotting app
First approach is to get hold of the original data and turn the rotation to isometric, i would use this approach. The original image is probably done in matlab (and I prefer not deal with it). But I prefer Mathematica as it makes better graphs in my oppinion, and is in this case nicer overall.
The function plotted is most likely x e-(x2 + y2). so lets plot that. With a help of bit of googling here for isometricView we get (I scaled axes flipped data etc):

You can then save that out as a PDF that can be opened in illustrator or just output a png file. This results in:

With a few more lines you can make the result fully vector, if you like. Consult Mathematica.SE.
You can use python with scipy for the same result easy enough (yes even vector output for lines is possible again some work, not much more than 20 minutes of googling), as well as matlab with a bit more work and so on.
Plotting in illustrator
Ok so we can plot in illustrator using a free plotting script by joojaa (yes, me) called jooGraphFunction found here. The hint for isometric plot can be found in the documentation.
Plot the parametric function:
x: 100*(+0.86605*0-0.86605*(t/100.))
y: 100*(-0.5*0-0.5*(t/100.)-(t/100.)*exp(-(t/100.)*(t/100.)- (0*0)))
Range -200 to 200 at step of 20
and you get:

Repeat the plot by changing 0 to 0.5 then 1, 1.5, 2, -0.5, -1, -1.5 and -2

So we need to draw the curves in oppsite direction the formula changes to:
x: 100*(+0.86605*(t/100.)-0.86605*(0))
y: 100*(-0.5*(t/100.)-0.5*-0 - 0*exp(-(t/100.)*(t/100.)- (0*0)))
again change to 0.5 then 1, 1.5, 2, -0.5, -1, -1.5 and -2

OK so this is a a bit tedious, but obviously works. So we would be better of reimplementing part of the script so it loops over the data in question. Fortunately the script is modular just copy the last part over to a new script file and hack:

Which ic not particularily elegant but works. Now we can just adjust the for loop to have any number of griditems easily so doing a denser grid is no more work than any other grid:

What about doing it manually
It is also possible to do this manually. Its a bit tedious but possible...
