Need to advise a client on correct settings or adjustments for text extraction from a pdf. Text is extractable in Acrobat 10, but we require Acrobat 7 compatibility.

What setting or preflight check in Acr 7 governs textboxes that would affect this? What could they change in layout/production to fix?

When using Acrobat 7 and attempting to extract text from the body of an article, all text for that vertical column is selected, and extracted text is a mess. Any insight on what can be done to resolve this is greatly appreciated. See the image below for an example.



Edit: Text extraction is from PDF to XML application, so unfortunately, using word or other text editors is not really an option. I can test extraction from PDF to text editor, but ultimately I need to know what properties/characteristics need to be adjusted within the actual PDF.
