I'm doing my first front-end web project:
a little poker hand calculator [you have the cards in your hands, physically, and you have a computer/phone to calculate the bets]

Since there's few elements [table with players, and action buttons], the page feels cold and empty.

What design "trick" could I use to make it feel warmer?

[colors, placement, etc, it's way too ugly as it is]

For starters, adding a background would help a lot.

After that:

Trying to keep the textures and texture sizes real
Adding more user info
Adding stats
Poker chips
Calculated advice on your next move
Designing a "human" dealer would help and him/her giving feedback would make it more interactive and real.

Basically there are a lot of things that you could improve on both
functionality and design. Don't be afraid of making the functionality
complicated as long as the design is simple enough so much so that a
rookie player can understand it.

A simple design doesn't mean simple functionality. It's actually
complicated stuff made simple through design.
