Today I painted a 2048px lava texture in Krita, using various brushes and adjusting all the colours after finishing the painting. I then exported the image as a PNG file to GIMP, and used a plug-in called Insane Bump. Insane Bump lets you generate normal maps, specular maps, etc, for an image.
So I did just that: generating various maps for the texture. However after inspecting the normal map I noticed there appears to be some banding (or stepping?) on the flatter areas of the texture. It's a little hard to spot but if you look carefully you can see them.
It's not too noticable when rendered in Blender or Unity but I would like to know how to reduce this kind of banding. Could the usage of the Gaussian Blur filter sort it out, or would it require a lot of hand work and tweaking?
