Please. I'm trying to make this effect in Adobe Illustrator

I'd like to know how I make this effect look like the mask effect in photoshop.
Something like "erase" part way smoothly, giving this shadow effect as if I had used the mask photoshop with gradient.

I believe it's in the oppacity mask tool, I just can not do it efficiently.
